Help! No crank, disabled VATS

My VATS started acting up leaving work today. Took 3 "SECURITY" light resets and it finally cranked. When I got home, I got out the laptop, fired up Tunercat, unchecked "VATS enable" and "VATS diagnostic" in the switches list. Flashed PCM successfully. But the damn thing still won't crank and the "SECURITY" light still comes on! WTF!?

Is it something with my Tunercat definition file or something? I'm using the $EE mask version 'BG,' Tunercat version 2.00 and the form library version 9.4.

The Vats is turned off in my PCM and everyonce in a while i still get a security light. This is a complete theory but i think the key still has to make a connection, just the resistor value doesn't matter.

Does your starter not crank when the light comes on? What should I do?

Its only happened to me twice in the last year or so. It seemed to happen when i just slammed the key in and tried to fire it. I would just pull the key out, wipe it off, and wait until the security light went off then try again.

Re: Help! No crank, disabled VATS

New update: Went outside to try cranking again. Turned key to start, nothing happened. I kept holding it and it cranked for like half a second and fired, and I want to say it stopped cranking BEFORE I let off the key (or maybe it was me). But the point is, I was holding it in start before it cranked. The interesting thing is, a friend of mine has a 94 T/A and he described this exact thing as what his car does sometimes. WTF is wrong with my car?

Update 2: My car is idling outside and I went to go sit in it and just ponder WTF is wrong with it when the "security" light came on. Can somebody with an FSM tell me what this means? Seems to me this shouldn't happen. I didn't even touch anything. Oh yeah, and my friend's 94 T/A does the same thing sometimes (security comes on while driving). I'm assuming it means something, but what?

If you lightly push in or pull out the key, while turning the motor over, will it crank?

While the motor is running and the light is on, if you push in or pull out slightly on the key, does the light go off?

A late model TA started acting funny and randomly not wanting to start. The ignition switch was bad ...

Re: Help! No crank, disabled VATS

Final update(?): My car is doing a pretty good impersonation of an old british roadster, with wiring by Lucus. I just drove to Autozone for plug wires (see my other thread ) which they did not have. It restarted for me in the parking lot. Drove back to my apartment. Shut it down and restarted about 6 or 7 times in 2 minutes. Worked each and every time. I swear, these cars can be THE most finicky POS's sometimes...

Anybody want to theorize some more?

I have tried that and it makes no difference. If my "security" light wasn't involved in this, I'd tend to blame the switch, but I think mine is fine.

I was thinking ignition switch until he said the security light came on. Mine has never come on while driving.

I think this answers my question and hopefully will help someone. Last question: does anybody know for sure where the VATS module is located in my 95 Z28? I'll check shoebox's site and my Haynes manual...
