Help...my beaters dead!!

There is so much knowledge in here I know you guys can help . I don't want to get the Camaro out in the snow and ice so I need to get my beater fixed. I have not worked on FWD cars very much but have done all my own work on my Camaro. Here's the problem...
Have a 1991 Corsica with a 3.1 V6. Earlier today when I was driving around it started doing something funny when I would take off from a stop. It would kinda shutter....almost feel like wheel hop on the front drivers side. Then a little bit after that I was going up a hill and all of a sudden it was like the car was in neutral. No matter what gear I put it in the car wouldn't move. When I would put it in gear I can hear a faint clicking noise coming from the front drivers side. Don't really have the $$$ to take it anywhere so I'll try to fix myself. Someone told me I probably will have to put in a axel assembly. How much do these cost? Any special tools needed? Any input would be helpful..
