Help me pick a cam
Help me pick a cam
Well ive decided to put a bigger boomstick in my car, but i dont know too much about them, ive been trying to pick a cam out and i just dont know which 1 i should go with, does anyone have any suggestions, i want a cam with mid-high end power, plus i need to know what all i should replace when doing a cam swap, thanks for any input
Re: Help me pick a cam
You cant go wrong with the LT4 hotcam kit IMHO. Its great for newbies on cam swaps because it comes with everything you need, so buying the wrong parts is impossible, and its very drivable, and makes nice power with stock heads, and it has a nice lopey sound to it. Price isn't too bad either if you shop around, you should be able to pick one up for ~$500-$550
This is the cam I started with, and I was very happy with it, till the itch for more power hit

Re: Help me pick a cam
I highly suggest doing supporting modifications before moving to a larger camshaft. Headers, Catback, CAI are the bare necessities as is a higher stall TC since you have an Auto. I like Edge's stuff, 3000rpm or so depending on the cam. Possibly even 3.73 gears to help tame the cam at low rpm's. Hotcam kit is a good deal for the money and if you want a small to mid size cam, it will do. Find what you like, and so a **** load of searching on the board. What do you want to rev to? Drivibility and issue? Gas mileage? Emissions? Etc.

Re: Help me pick a cam
i have some boltons already, i have headers, cai, 3.73s, 2800 stall, drag radials, magnaflow catback, and some other things, i also have a 150 shot of the laughing gas
Re: Help me pick a cam
I'd go with the XE 224/230. It has better torque than the 224/236 and is a bit more street friendly. If you went the 224/236 route, you could have a nice nitrous cam if you had it ground on a 114 LSA. The hotcam idea is ok but I think there are better cam choices out there. Two good sleeper cams are the Crane 227, and the XE 212/218 Comp cam. You can 't hear them at all but they make some mean power. The CC305 is a good all around choice, and would work very well with your current mods. It has a nice lope to it and is a great all around power maker. The cam techs will help you with what springs and valvetrain mods you will need for the swap.
Re: Help me pick a cam
If u want something small with good drivability then i recomend the LT4 Hotcam which is pretty much what I have. It pulls pretty decent. The cc305 is also a good small cam. If u want something more aggressive but not too wild then I like the cc306, which is probably what I am about to switch to. Peace, Dustin.

With the supercharger on the car, who knows what it will do. I may be puttin on the charger next week. I would like to dyno the car without the charger first though. She's puttin out over 400 horse for sure.

Sounds like your good and ready then.
If you just want a little more and nice proven power in a cheap package I would suggest a hotcam kit. With your combo it shouldn't have any problems running 12.50 with a set of drag radials.
The 224/230 comp has been giving us nice power and torque lately.. Its a trade off though, in price...

If you want a smoother idle, get a cam with a 114 or larger lsa vs a 112. The other parts I used with it are CC beehive valve springs, comp r lifters, and gm perf parts roller rockers.

Re: Help me pick a cam
if i decided to go with the cc306, what other parts would be highly recommended to install with the new cam? and with a best guestimate, what kinda of power would i be putting down?
Re: Help me pick a cam
CC306 with most bolt ons through a A4 youll be in the 345-355 rwhp range I think. I love that camshaft, but problem is you have to rev pretty high to get 100% out of it.
Comp Cam 918 springs
Hardened pushrods
1.6 Pro Mags
retainers, shims, small parts.
probably try a new timing chain and possibly lifters.
Adult Depends for when you **** yourself at WOT.
