well initial damage report is either my flywheel is cracked/bolts loose. or the rear main bearing is cracked. they are going to dig a bit in the next day and see if they can figure out which it is.

Its bottom end noise. Got the car back. Will be removing the engine as soon as I possibly can and hope to have it rebuilt and running sometime in august.
Sigh

Like I mentioned earilier but you did not seem to understand my remark, I am wondering if anyone knows what the cheapest option is. Is there a cheap prebuilt/new short block option or are you better off letting a good shop rebuild it? I mean a shop that thought that was anything but rod knock certainly isn't a shop to let rebuild it. I'd drive it to a GOOD shop that knows what they are doing.

Sorry, I did misunderstand you at first.
The first shop does have some good mechanics, but definitely not a specialist shop. Thats why they gave the car back to me with no charge.
I am going to pull the engine myself and then take it in somewhere. Actually I might drive it to the shop first so they can hear it running and give me a better idea of what I would be looking cost wise. Then I will pull it and take it to them. I think I will save a lot on labor if I do the removal/install myself. Just have to wait for my new garage to get finished,

I would just say do it your self you could have it done cheaper and just as fast as a shop and then u will have the extra money your not spending on labor to add more upgrades to it. It might even be easy fix once u pull the engine apart.

I dunno about this being a bottom end noise there is really no real solid way to tell unless you have dropped the oil pan to find out for sure. I sounds like the same noise mine is currently making now and mine is a new rebuilt engine so i am hoping your wrong here as i will know more tomorrow when my friend comes over that has had close to 20 of these cars..

He knows them inside and out lol. I just am doubting its a bottom end noise to me sounds like a lifter tappin... which u really can't tell if you aren't 100% familar with these engines..
The bad part is my new engine that is makin this noise has maybe 250 miles on it grrrr.....

I am taking my oil filter to the engine shop monday so they can cut it open and look for metal. At that time they will determine how bad it is. If there is no metal they want me to bring the car to them so they can go over it before i pull the engine to ensure its internal. if there is metal i will pull the engine and take it in to them.

I am going to to a basic rebuild, back to stock. But might do a small cam just for the hell of it. Any suggestions for a better cam fora daily driver? I am not looking for anything crazy

You should do a search for cams. You'll find more info than you can believe.

I sure hope you checked your fly wheel because this is exactly how my car sounded .... And my buddy came over and inspected it and if it had been a rod knockin as hard as he drove it it would have blew the engine... The fly wheel will make this kind of racket it and worse....
So if you haven't checked your fly wheel check it all the way around because it can start in just one spot and quickly break another weld and so on and it will get louder when it breaks more welds.
Once the new fly wheel was on the noise was completely gone....

And now my car is back to being a champ again.

I guess I could update this post,
I ended up spinning the Bearing on the #8 con rod. So that's what the noise was. In case someone is searching the forum and has a similar knock.
Rebuilt the engine with a cc503 and mildly ported heads. Been running pretty good, but I need some bigger injectors now. 30# I put in were not quite enough and it gets lean up top.
