HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
I need help because I was driving one day and then my car started to tick around the pass side of the engine and sounds like it was under the valve cover. I took the covers off on both sides and adjusted the valves and found nothing. It sounds like it could be a lifter but I'm not sure, gets louder when I rev it. I am afraid it could be the crank or a bearing, any kind of tests I can do on it? I turned the crank with a ratchet and when i get to a certain part on it it seems to make a noise but only in the particular point when it comes back to that part. Please help, I'm afraid the engine could be gone but it drives and runs fine but it won't go over 80 easy.
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
could be an exhaust leak around the exhaust manifold or header (if you have them)..........they can frequently sound like a strong ticking (if its a header......i have one felpro gasket that is brand new and never used i could mail u for like $5 + shipping)
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
I don't think it's an exhaust leak if you can hear it get louder when revving.
When my manifold leaked, I couldn't hear it at all unless the engine was under load -like giving it moderate gas at 40 in 4th gear.

thats true.....exhaust leaks dont usually make a lot of noise until revving a little.
hmmmmmmm
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
My 95Z has been doing the same thing. Does yours seem to come and go? I cannot hear it while driving, but when I pull up to a stoplight it will start ticking after a couple of seconds. The car runs real strong, and I have been driving it for a couple months like this. I figure when something breaks I will figure it out. I had one guy say it might be a broken clutch spring.
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
well get out a nice long screw driver and put it on the valve cover and to your ear, and anything else you think is making noise.
there is to many other things under the engine compartment that could make noise to just guess it is the valve train.

Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
I got the same problem, exhaust manifold leak. I said screw it I can live with the leak just save up for headers and do it all at once because you have to take off the manifold to replace the gasket anyway.
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
I have headers and I have the copper gaskets and it's not an exhaust leak, I have had those before and buying the copper ones that last forever fixed that. It is in the valve trane or something. The car runs fine but when it gets warmed up it seems like when I stop it wants to die out but never does, it backfires alittle and the ticking is a moving part for sure but it gets louder when I rev. The car still shows oil pressure but I can feel this through my clutch pedal, the vibration that is. Someone told me it could be a collapsed lifter or spring but I don't know what to do about it and how to check the lifters. Thanks for the info and help me on this if you can.
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
I pulled a LT1 one time that had a similar ticking noise(louder with RPMs) definitely a moving part. Once I took the engine apart I found a completely fugged up piston.
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
Check in the dark and make sure you don't have any arcing along any of the plug wires or boots. They can make a pretty good racket and would increase with RPM, and cause your power problems up top. Unless you've checked recently, I wouldn't rule out an exhaust leak just because you have copper gaskets...those can fail too if a bolt loosens up.
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
I kinda have a ticking sound comming from somwhere too. If it were to be a lifter. Just replace them? Or will using a heavyer weight oil work for the mean time?
Re: HELP!!!! Loud ticking on pass side of engine.
I checked it out and it's a piston rod and I'm gonna pull the engine because it's too much damage and found a motor for $100. Thanks for the input.
