I use free scan and normally I make it start reading before I save a file. After the two computers are talking and I look at the digital dash, I can tell if it is ready/fine. Then I do the whole save thing and make a run.
Once the run is over I click stop and pull over to the side of the road. As far as the "jargen" mine always comes up in a nice excel format. I just open up excel and open up my latest run. As far as how to read it, the top column contains headers as to what values you can see such as road speed and knock retard. To find out when your run starts, follow the TPS sensor column down until you see 100 and that means everything on that line and under is part of your run.
I'm not sure if that is what you were asking, but I think you might need to establish communication between the two comps before saving the file. Then as far as reading, it's just like any other Excel table.

When you click the button at the bottom that I believe says log scan or save scan, it pops up a save prompt. Then just like any other file you save, create a name, and file destination. When you hit the save button on that page, it begins the logging of the data. When you hit stop or whatever the button says, it ends the scan and saves the file.
Just do a search or recent documents or remember what name you gave the file, and open it in Excel. It will pop up as a big spread sheet.
I had the same problem figuring it out the first time I used it. Just play around with it a little bit and try what I wrote above, it will work after trying a few things.
