Re: HELP -issue with adjusting valves

Good. Just remember that your battery is near death and don't explect to leave it idle for too long because it will probably do the same thing. I got a optima red top for my 97Ss and it holds up quite well with what little driving I do. International puts out a good battery as well as Delco and Sears Die Hard (of course you want to get the top of the line even with those brands, usually with long warranty.

As far a adjusting the valves, if you have stock lifters, you should probably start at around 1/2 turn past 0. I believe Factory is one turn, but leaving some margin for safety as usual. Some here recommend as low as 1/8 turn, but you can see where someone's idea of 0 lash may be slightly different than another's. My mechanic started with 1/2 turn and decided to go a full turn when he found that they quieted up a bit.

As a rule, RRs are a bit noisey. Self-Adjusting RRs are supposedly noiser than non-Self adjusting.

The idea of the adjusting is to have the roller tips in constant contact with the valve stems. Adjusting them with a little extra past 0 sort of ensures that when the valves is closed it is still in contact with the rockers.

I recently experieced a couple of my RRs coming off the valve stem, breaking the retainer locks and actually dropping a valve on a piston, so try and do it right the first time. If they are a bit too noisey for you with 1/2 turn, you might just crank them all another 1/2 turn and call it good. You can always do it over, but it I believe it is better to have them at a full turn than to have them too loose and have them fall of the valves. And don't forget to polylock them down when they are adjusted (don't allow the nut to turn when you allen wrench the polylocks.)

Re: HELP -issue with adjusting valves

well i did it i adjusted them, if anything they might turn out to be to loose or tight. just starting the car up to hear them and check them won't hurt anything if they are to loose or alittle to tight. i didn't crank on them to tighten them down.. i just made them so they wouldn't fall off. maybe i could get autozone to replace it if i tell them i'm having problems with it? its a dura last gold series battery. i think it says 8 year warrenty for prorate. so i will get the car running first then worry bout the battery see if i have a problem then. i can hear water or whatever move around in the battery when you move it around. somehow i don't think thats to great?

Re: HELP -issue with adjusting valves

well i hooked up the Delteq system and wired up the plug wires. turned the car over and it had a week crank and a backfire while trying tio start so i shut it off. the opti box frim the delteq kit is getting correct power since the led flashes on it when you turn the key. this leads me to think the valves are off... if they are to loose the car can't turn over so maybe thats the problem?
