HELP, I think I just f'ed something up :(

I was on a backgroad, and I dropped the clutch at about 1.5k rpm's, no biggie. I mighta over-revved on the 1-2 shift, I think I hit around 6500rpm's.

Immediately after I let off, my engine started making this horrible noise. You can slightly hear it when just cruising, but when you give it a bit of gas it makes this kinda klunking sound, seems to be coming from the driver side of the engine. My friend who doesn't know much about cars said it was an exhaust leak, but I know better then that, it doesn't sound anything like a leak. The clunking noise gets faster as the rpm's increase.

What the hell did I just do to my engine??? Bend a pushrod, collapse a lifter, bind up a spring, blow a head gasket??? I've driven the car like that quite a few other times and no problem.

*sigh*
I hope my engine rebuild it still under warranty

I'd guess a bent pushrod if anything. Pushrods are the weak link on LS/T 1's for a reason to prevent motor damage to more costly parts.......

Best thing to do is (obviously) not drive it. Pull a valvecover and check the rockers/p-rods/springs. Just eye things over and see if you can pinpoint something majorly out of place. It could be as simple as a rocker backed off or a rocker stud break.

Sounds like the same thing that just happened to me.. Spun a rod bearing. Of course the easy way to check this is pull the dipstick and look for flakes of metal. Sorry...

When something liek this happens under those conditions (high revving) most the time something in the valvetrain just f'ed up. So like others said, i'd pull valve covers and see what you can find. Might want to undo the rocker arms and take out the pushrods and make sure they aren't bend (try rolling them on glass or a mirror). You may get the valve covers off and see somethign that's wrong right away. Good luck.

If it is a deep clunk, it's probably a rod bearing. Valvetrain noises tend to be more clicky and clacky. Exhaust leaks don't clunk. Without hearing it, I bet on rod bearing.

Well... I really hope that you're wrong

The noise can definitely be heard more on the passenger side of the engine then the drivers.

This engine is only about 35,000 miles old though, would it really spin a rod bearing that easily with that mileage? The engine had a 3 yr/36k mile warranty.... it's under 36k miles, but unfortunately over 3 years

Re: HELP, I think I just f'ed something up :(

with that low miles, i dont think its a rod bearing...

u gotta pull the v-cover and see... make sure all the retaniers, locks are in place

the SAME thing happened to me when my v6 went on me... i didnt know much bout cars back then, so i just put a new motor in... now if i think bout the sound again, i'm thinking the piston was hitting the valve.... so i might have broke a spring or something....

i have a feeling a spring went bad, so the valve is just sorta slapping on the piston...
