HELP, Header question - steering linkages removal!

Hey,

I'm putting headers in my 96 camaro z28. I need to know how to remove the driver's side steering linkage (i think its where the rage joint is?) If anyone can tell me how to do this, or any place I can find Illustrations, that'd be great - I need to get this thing off! Also, are there precautions i should take when removing it?

thanks!

-Lane

I would just take it loose at the other end, not the rag joint end, but the end near the firewall. If you look at the linkage, there is one thru bolt on the end near the firewall, just remove that bolt and the linkage slides apart. If I'm not mistaken, there is a plastic cover that covers this part up, just remove the cover and you should see the bolt.

I separated it at the joint in the middle. Getting it back together was kind of difficult. I had to use a grinder to enlarge the opening enough to get it started going back together.

Cool

Remove the upper bolt near the firewall, and the bottom bolt near the steering rack. then slide the linkage up further onto the steering column shaft (coming out of the firewall). That will make enough slack to pull the bottom off of the steering rack gear. Once the bottom's free, slide the top end off the steering column shaft. To install it, do the reverse ... Slide it "too far" up the steering column and you'll be able to mount the bottom. Then get it situated and replace the bolts. I put some antisieze on mine because they're gettin rusted and hard to turn.

I recently had to change my rag joint and had to remove that linkage... it was a pain. I had to beat it off of the steering column with a rubber hammer. When I finally got it off, I put some engine oil inside the linkage where it slips over the shafts at either end and could take it on or off just by pushing/pulling with my hand.
Just a suggestion.
