Help! Grinding going into 2nd gear?

I just noticed this last night as i was driving. whenever i try to shift really fast, (i mean the actuall act of putting it into 2nd gear, not engaging the clutch) im getting a grinding noise. if i take it slow, i can do it with out any noise and with ease. but still, either going from 1-2, or 3-2 really fast, im still getting this grind.

I just put a new street twin in, and it has about 320 miles since install.

any ideas?

Thanks,

-Ryan

Maybe a bent shift fork?

it cant be the shift fork, since the grinding is simply moving the tranny to 2nd gear, not engaging the clutch

sounds like syncros to me...happened on my t-5 with third gear...it will only get worse if thats what it is, ie. grinding with slower shifts ...or mabye you bent the input shaft during the install, ive heard that will cause gears to gring, never experienced it though...

these sort of things are the stuff that just **** me off. i just get the tranny back in and now it has to come back out. its been over a year since ive been able to run the car seriously at the track, one thing after another. finally finished the entire drivetrain and suspension, just got my etstreets here, all i was waitin on was 200 more miles to break in the clutch. i havent even been able to enjoy the car for over a year. oh yeah, and im broke, and dont have a job...... and really dont have time to get one with finals coming up in a few weeks.

anyways, sorry to have to vent here, im just really pissed off.

if it is syncros, learn to double clutch and dont worry about it till you get some money...i drove my third gen with third gear syncro gone for like 5 months, and it was gone, you couldnt get it into gear without double clutching..nobody else could get the car into third gear without grinding it, but if moneys tight...drive it like that, or skip 2nd gear completely till you can afford to fix it

You my friend have a bad 1/2 syncro set, you will soon most likely notice 1st gear to stick while trying to remove it from gear, and 2nd will start to grind even worse. Hate to say it, but unless you are brave and take it apart yourself ( 1/2 are probably the hardest to fix, 5/6 and reverse are quite easy) it is going to cost you over $1g . To be even more specific, syncrhos rarely go bad, they will wear, and eventually, way down the road go bad, unless you grind all the time. What actually is probably the cause is there are three retainer clips inside the syncrho itself that are expanded by a spring loaded ring, these retainers are what separate each set of gears, along with something else it is what makes the click between each gear. These clips break very easily, either that or the ring that expands them is worn or broken.

Once you get the tranny out and stabilized input shaft down, it does not take long to get the case apart with the right tools, and at this point you could take it into a tranny shop to get it fixed, or try it yourself, be warned though, the tailshaft housing is very easy to remove and install, but when you get into the main case you have to deal with shift linkage which is pretty tricky.

That should be all the info you need to know, let me know if you have any more questions, I am quite experienced with the inside of a T56, on my third internal repair right now.

Ryan-
Dont worry, we'll get the tranny fixed. We should tear it down, and then order the parts you need from d&d,

Having a bad 1-2 synchro set makes plenty sense, but is there a 3-2 synchro, cause it grinds going from 3-2 really fast also? or is it the same synchro any time you are going into 2nd gear?

No such thing. The only gears that share syncros are above and below each other, 1/2 3/4 and 5/6, reverse has one all to itself, so when it goes bad you can just flip it over.
