Help with estimate on engine builders cost

I want to see how much *ballpark* my motor is going to cost. I am about to pick it up from my engine builder and dont wanna be suprised

No parts, all labor

I had him:
-Straight 4 bolt coversion
-Line bore
-bored .030 over
-Ringed the pistons
-Balanced rotating assembly and crank
-Assemble shortblock
-install new cam bearings

It was a 355 so no clearancing or anything. i supplied all parts

Thanks!

Just labor?

I'm not sure how much a 4-bolt conversion goes for, but as for the rest:

What it cost me at my machine shop:

$125 -Line bore
$100 -bored .030 over
-Ringed the pistons part of assembly, installing pistons onto rods was $25 total though
$125 -Balanced rotating assembly and crank
$175 -Assemble shortblock oil pan to intake/valve covers
$20 -install new cam bearings & freeze plugs

well it ushally includes a line bore, witch i listed... i dont know how much to drill and tap, but i bet that makes up the other half

I just had a frined say expected $1800...wtf?? got me really scared

Got another question tho... What you go get something like a line bore or balancing..... and it list "$200" is that total? my friend seems to think its would be $200 + labor.
i would think the $200 is the labor saying there are not parts involved

dunno

It depends on what kind of balance job you had done. If it's internal I would say $500 if it's external I would say $200
On the 4 bolt conversion I would think it's got to be atleast $400

Was it really line bored? If it was it would need to be honed so you could double what was mentioned above.

Line bore $150
Line Hone $125
Balance $200
Bore $125
assemble $300
4 bolt conversion $400
Cleaning?
Magniflux?

There are a lot of things that could make the price change I would think you've got to be looking at $1400

I paid right around $300 in labor for my last set of splayed main caps. That included the line bore to make everything line up correctly.

My current builder generally charges $1000 to assembly a motor, but he doesn't compromise on anything. If he doesn't like something, he won't do it. Very good guy.
