help, engine sounds real bad, sound clip inside

To make a long story short, I had this kind of screeching type of sound coming from the engine that became progressively worse until now I'm afraid to drive it. I'm not sure where to start, I thought it could be valvetrain noise so I asked my friend to come over and listen he said it doesn't sound like that. Also, aditional info is the car has 80k miles, gets sprayed with 100 shots regularly, oil level is good, doesn't burn oil, car has no codes thrown, and the car actually drives 100%. The sound is horrible though. Anyone have any clue as to what could be wrong with it?? In the sound file I moved from the engine compartment with the hodo oen then went back to the drivers side thats why the sound chages a little bit.

Anyway, here is the file any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Brian

I really didn't hear a screenching noise just lifters like normal!

Have you checked you belt Tensioner pulley to see if it is causing this? Have you checked your alternator to see if a bearing has gone down in it?

If oil pressure is okay, no big problems. Put it on ramps and listen to the oil pan area.

let us know what ya hear?

Have a goodone Lee!

All I heard was maybe some dirty pullies/belts, and some lifter tick. If oil is pressure is good then I think you're fine. Obviously check your belts, pullies, and anything connected to them for dirty stuff or shot bearings.

Loose rocker arm or maybe a spring problem? Take the valve cover off and try to isolate the noise.

thanks for the replies. From the sound clip I have it's hard to tell but yes it does sound alot different then it's supposed to sound even though you can't really hear it, if you listen to the end of the sound clip you kind of hear what I'm talking about, screech was probably a wrong word more of a chatter. I'll check the belt, drive accesories but to me it sounds internal. I'm thinking i'll take off the driver side valve cover because thats side looks easier to do and take a listen. Also I'll go ahead and get it on ramps and try to listen to the oil pan area like suggested to. I'll let you know what I find.

Just listened, and sounds to me (from what I can make out that is) like an exhasut leak. Here's an easy way to isolate it though. Go get an auto stethiscope (sp?) at almost any auto parts place. The normal ones come with a solid end that picks up on stuff when you touch to it. I found that fairly useless with trying to track down external sounds to a general location. SOO, get a length of brake line about 18" to 24" long, and cut the flares off it. Use it in the rubber tube instead of the solid one that came with the stethiscope. It really helps me to islate stuff..

Also, things that can tick (other than the injectors) are all mostly in the heads. If you have a lifter ticking, if can sound similar but a little deeper in and centered a little more over the intake (the sound that is). Springs, pushrods, rockers - They are all suspect when looking for a tick up top...

Good luck with it man, and let us know what you find..

I brought it into the shop, mechanic said it sounded like a washer machine when I drove in, lol. Anyway, he says it's the throwout bearing on the clutch, which sucks because i just put in the street twin less then a year ago. I'm going to contact mcleod see if it's under warranty.
