Help -- dash lights OUT - need help asap

I cant figure this one out, please help. I was letting a friend borrow my 97 Z this morning. He said he was driving it, decided to play with the dimmer switch for a second and then he heard a "pop" and the back light to the instrument cluster went out. The digital odometer etc.. is still on just the back light to the rest of the gauges isint working. It almost appears as if the dimmer is all the way down but it isint. I searched all over for blown fuses but none that i see.. also i noticed that when you lock the door with the remote and the lights flash... the backlight does come on then (flashes with the light) what could possibly be wrong? It doesnt seem like a bad fuse/bulbs because it lights up perfectly when you lock the door. Please help asap, I cant drive this car at night untill i resolve this.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Maybe the dimmer switch gave out. You will have to do some electrical testing to see where the problem lies.

Pull the dimmer fuse out and look at it carefully.

I'll second shoeboxes oppinion
change the fuse anyways - just to make sure.
also if you do decide to get a new switch - you can get it off ebay for something like $10-15.
