HELP!! car wont start and the security light is blinking

When key is put in security light blinks and tells me that the resistor pellet is defective. But When light is lit solid that means that fuel and ignition is turned off by computer.. am i right. since it is blinking atm could we roll start it(6spd) with the key in to bypass it which would in turn once the car was started notify the comp that the resistor is bad and then deactivate the PASSkey II system allowing us to start and restart the car afterwards??
Again any help is greatly appriciated.

Happened to me on my old '97 Z28.....ended up having it flat bedded to the dealer and having them put in a new ingnition lock cylinder. It wasn't reading the resistor chip anymore. Good luck

The key pass system is great until it starts having problems. If you dont have a spare key to try , i would just get the lock ignition cylander replced, cause getting another key cut for key pass can get real costly.

I do not know about the bypass thing, but you could try a spare key. If you do not have one you may have to wait until Monday and go to the dealer and supply your VIN to get a new key.

If I am not mistaken the computer gives you 3 chances in a row to insert the incorrect key then locks up for a little while, right? You could try cleaning the pellet to make sure you are getting a good connection and then try it again. Is the pellet loose? If that is your problem, you could measure the resistance and install a resistor in the circuit to bypass the key pellet. I believe that Brent's page has the instructions on how to do this.

Hope this helps.

It seems this is a comon problem on these cars. I had the same problem. I snipped the wires leading to the ignition underneath the dash and soldered in a resistor matching the impedance value (ohms) of the resistor in my key, effectively convincing the PCM that the key is ALWAYS in the ignition. It might have cost me $5. But, I don't care about VATS.

yea that would be a good thing, but what happened was, i called a locksmith to get me a key made, and he told me that there is 2 wires that connect to the ignition cylinder and he bet 1 broke off and sure enough that is what happened. but its all good now.

Just a note of appreciation to this forum and the knowledge that is shared here.
I just had the dreaded VATS disease with the "security" light and no-start situation, turned out to be dirt in the ignition switch (both sets of keys wouldn't work). A gentle shot of compressed air and some contact cleaner/lube and all is well, was able to draw upon the message base here for the troubleshooting help I needed

Thanks.!
