help, car and owner are confused

Ok, I'm having a problem with my alarm or anti theft system not sure which it is. The little red light that is in the dash shows me that there is some kind of problem. I have a 96 Firebird Formula with a GM dealer alarm, the dealer told me it wasn't a factory alarm so I'm assuming it's from the dealership cause it's GM. The car broke down two months ago, and due to me being at school I haven't had time to fix it. The lid to the center console was left open and caused the lights to flash forever until the battery was completely dead. The battery has been dead for a month or more, but we charged it back up. Now to the strange part about the system. The car will not turn over and is acting as if it were a security lock out. The little red light flashes extremely dim, and goes into the fast mode on it's own from time to time, not nearly as bright as normal and just does it off and on. Does the system have it's own backup battery or something that might be dead that is causing the car to go through security lockout? I know this is long but I need to get past this to be able to diagnose the car and get it fixed. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Aron

it sounds like the battery doesnt have enough juice to turn the engine over, because the alarm is disabled once the key is turned over

The battery is fully charged. So I'm pretty sure that's not it. Any other ideas? It turned over once but then the anti theft went into it's **** when I unplugged something. So I'm completely lost as to what is causing this.

Thanks,
Aron

Try getting a jump or using someone else's battery. They don't like sitting around discharged for very long at all.

The alarm light would only flash really dim if it's not getting enough juice. There is no back up system for the alarm. If the car doesn't have power, you could drop it off a cliff and the alarm wouldn't notice at all.

I know from the way I describe it, it seems like the battery, but the thing is, it goes from dim to bright in a matter of time. It will be all normal, then I'll unlock the car and it goes into that mode or whatever again. I have no idea what could cause it. I am going to try a different battery just to see though.

Thanks,
Aron
