you should have rotated the crank to #1 TDC and it would have come right out. if you were able to turn the crank possibly by attaching the hub back on or just trying by hand then that cam sprocket will rotate around and give you enough slack to pull the chain off.

By the position in your pic, I can see how there won't be any way for it to pivot. The dowel is too high.
