Question Heater Hoses - What would you suggest?

Thanks to Shoebox and his very complete website I was able to find a schematic to show what part I'm refering to.

http://shbox.com/1/heater_hoses.jpg

I'm worried about #16 in the drawing. It's a rubber boot that covers the seam where a metal pipe goes inside a rubber hose. The boot is cracked all over, obviously needs replacing. Is this something I should be really worried about? When I replace it, how far back/forward from that piece should I replace? Anyone else have/had this problem?

16 is actually the coupling that is crimped over the end of the hose to hold it on the metal pipe. Are you having any leaks? There also may be a cushion on the hose to keep it from rubbing, but I can't remember. Maybe that is what you are referring to?

I'm leaking something. I can see the 'rainbow' pattern on rainy days. From what I can see I'm not leaking anything from this seam. #16 basically wraps around the place where the hose and the metal pipe come together. I can see the seam through a crack in #16. The hose it's covering looks fine, as opposed to #16 which is noticebly worn, cracked and dry.

There is a piece of heat shield paper around the hose to keep it from rubbing against that sharp edge it rests against. This is further towards the firewall though, about 8" away from 16.

I don't recall any rubber etc cushion around those...
There is a heat shield[silver] to protect from exhaust manifold heat..
That rainbow you are talking about, is probably oil based ?[you mean a rainbow in a puddle under the car I think?]
AT fluid, motor oil, PS fluid etc..
Probably not coolant[unless you have oil in it?]

Yea my heater hoses are leaking onto the headers right now....all it does is smoke out of the hood a normal color smoke...no rainbows. I think you're burning oil or some other liquid.

As Shoe mentions, #16s are pemanent hose clamps. If they are broken, then the hose clamp is broken, which may cause a leak at that connection.

You can remove them, especially if they are already cracked. Then just repace them with practical worm screw clamps.JMHO
