headstuds Vs Head bolts

I am looking at ARP head studs and bolts. I want to know a few things.

1. Are studs over kill?
2. What causes studs to get better/more even clamping than bolts?
3. Is it a problem to use bolts?

Have a stock bottom end with stock heads cc306 cam and alkl the other goodies. Are studs over kill or should I cough up the extra dough to put them on?

thanks
matt

Don't use studs in a Camero. If you have to ever pull the heads, you can't, unless you remove ALL the studs before the head.PITA
With a street build no need for them unless you are running a butt load of NO or big blower.

Never take advice from a guy who can't spell CamAro. HA, just kidding... sorta. You can't remove a head unless you remove ALL the bolts either? So I don't know where he was going with that. Studs are an overkill for a stock setup. And there is no reason to go through and put them on stock heads. But if you ever want to step up and put out some serious power you might as well go studs whenever you change your heads.

you wont be able to pull the heads off without pulling the engine.

I agree with head studs being overkill for your setup. Furtermore you run the chance of leaking coolant from your heads. My buddy had issues getting the studs to seal correctly when he went with head studs.

Yes you can... You just have to put the heads on first then slide the studs in... I admit I haven't done it personally but my good buddy has twice so that's good enough for me.

Problem is to put head studs in you have to be very precise, make sure all the threads are clean, torque the stud in, loosen, torque again, loosen then torque again, I belive thats the correct method, so either do it right or not at all & just get good head bolts.

Also, I know a buddy that also couldn't keep the bottom row of studs from leaking.

Eddie,
Didn't say it couldn't be done I said it's a PITA.YOU should try it sometime and get FIRST hand experence.
When you put them back on get your dial ind. out and measure bolt stretch, and pulling them with a box end wrench is a pain. Can't use a socket, the indicator is on top of the stud. The last half of a turn is a bitch with a 9/16 combo wrench, double wrenched.Everybody should have that back pulling experence at least one time.

I didn't say you did. :-) That's why I quoted the other guy. I know it is not easy... Head bolts aren't "easy" either. I was just saying it was possible.
