I think the biggest thing that kills the bearings is people spinning their motors too hard. Just get a good rev limiter and set it at 6k rpms and you should be fine.

I just did a cam in my car, 85K miles. I can't see why people would spin a bearing by getting heads/cam other than spinning the motor higher, but with good oil and not turning 6500+ rpms i don't see why not.

what bout 122k!? using a mild street cam.

prob just worth just rebuilding the motor at that point ya think?
i would love to have a nice beefy 355 built pushing 400hp.

also, what about getting the heads professionally ported and polished, would it restore any lost power over the miles driven ?

im only 18, just wondering what i should do with the car.

Or Sell the car for spring!!~~~?

A valve job and springs will make alot of difference in a high mileage car. And a professional port job will add even more.

I did it on a 157,000 mile engine. 11,000 miles later, I'm still good. No high spinning. It just can't be done on stock internals... I'm still on the stock rev limiter. To me it is not worth my engine crapping out to raise the limit.

146k miles on my stock bottom end... turning 7k everytime the car hits the road atleast once....
car has advanced induction ported lt1 heads, and their 211 cam and has been running since jan 03 so id say its alright.. but if something happens dont blame me for saying its okay...

I did my cam swap with 103k miles on the clock. I'm at 117k now with no problems. Rev limit is 6300 or so. I don't spin it up to that very often though..

A well maintained LT1 shortblock will handle more abuse than many may think... we've had a pile of customers with 100k+ miles do the exact same thing as Brian...

He's even spraying the thing... made a little under 500rwhp SAE with 100hp jets IIRC. I told him I'd like to be up at CAM next time he does that... but I don't want to be standing near it

For what you're talking about, I'd compression test it, and provided your results were within 10% of each other, run it as long as you can. Regarding the spinning bearing story... there was an excellent thread in Advanced Tech awhile back on that article. It may prove helpful

Yeah like phil said the lt1 is a pretty tuff motor *knock on wood*
but eh mine does burn oil but that dont bother me much right now. infact tonight was leaving friends shop and my low oil light came on... so i said **** it and revved it up to 6k and dropped the clutch
my oil is just on the tip of the dipstick tube
(yeah my car aint had a easy life)

oh and phil yeah right under 500rwhp with the cutouts closed... on spray
did do the 150 jets but it went to 13:1a/f ratio and stopped the pull just too lean for me...

when u swap the heads/cam ****... keep the dirt out your motor!!!! iv seen some be careless and drop dirt when pulling the intake...
