headers + y-pipe

i'm still a beginner with most of the aftermarket parts so i figure i'd come here for advice. i'm still 18 and in college, but i receieved a pretty hefty amount of a refund from all my financial aid, scholarships, and grats i recieved so i thought i'd go out and treat myself(my car) to something special for christmas.

i'm not trying to spend a whole lot, even though this seems like it to me, i'm hoping it would be worth it. i found this header system and was wondering if it was good for the price, or even good at all seeing as its slightly cheap.

http://www.lmperformance.com/7322/2.html

i have a 1997 Z28 with an SLP loudmouth catback exhaust and K&N intake, and emissions IS a factor where i live. so would this be nice for a starting exhaust? will it complete my whole exhaust? is there something else i would need? THANKS in advance

Re: headers + y-pipe

I'd save some money and buy some used headers of the site. I got my SLP for $275 shipped to my house with the y-pipe.

Re: headers + y-pipe

that is a good point and a pretty nice price difference. and in mentioning that, does that mean that i can find some just as good for cheaper? or this product itself isn't a very good set for the price?

Re: headers + y-pipe

That would be a good system considering you need to satisfy emissions and that is a complete system which has the headers and a catted y-pipe.

Re: headers + y-pipe

most used headers ive been seeing for sale on this site, either have lots of dents, no coating left, rusted to hell and junk, or all of the above. Its almost easier to just buy new ones, b/c by the time you get them recoated youd be at the same price. This is if you want coated headers, which most opt for.

yea that is true. although the used ones are a whole lot cheaper, i'd feel safer knowing i had brand new ones. and in my opinion it would be better to fork out a little extra for some new ones.

on the other topic, is this a good sytem? i would rather buy this one since it comes with everything instead of buying the headers and y-pipe separately because i know this goes together, unless someone has another one recommended. and even though we know people to get inspection stickers from if we needed one and couldn't pass , i would still like to be emissions legal

Re: headers + y-pipe

Do you plan on modding the car more later? If so I would go with a pacesetter 1 3/4" long tube header and Y pipe combo from Texas Speed. They seem to have a very good price on this. 1) you need 1 3/4" do to the superior power potential. I hate to see you try to scrape by with a shorty header and y pipe, only get a few hp gain, then when you do more mods later (and you're still short on money cause those mods are more expensive...pretty soon you'll be to the heads/cam mods) and you'll have to upgrade the headers b/c they will rob you of power. 2) They are coated. Some have had good results some have poor (I think you'll have that with alot of brands). 3) They are very good quality, arguably more solidly made than the hooker.

I speak from experience. I bought SLP stainless 1 3/4" mids years ago b/c I couldn't afford FLP or Kooks (I still spent BIG $$ even on them). Now I did get many years of service from these, but now I am going all out with a set of long tubes, b/c I'm doing H/C. After I get done I am gonna have well over 1K in headers. If I had just waited and done it right once, I could have saved 1/2 the $$, that I could have spent on other mods.

If you don't plan on modding it later, then get the MAC's.

There are plenty of people pushing big numbers and using mid-length headers on top of it. Granted long tubes are the best route to go, emissions is a primary concern for this guy and long tubes, even with emissions fittings, are still technically in violation.
