which headers? whats the difference ?

i ordered a borla catback for my 96 z28. havent installed it yet.. alot of ppl tell me to get headers. but i got no idea which one to get. i always hear about longtube and shorties.. can someone tell me what are the differences between these 2? also which header would work best with the borla catback. do i also need a y pipe? if yes which one would work good with the borla system. im also planning to change my cats to high flow cats. which brand do u recomend.
thanx in advance.

Long tubes (hooker) will give ya about 20-25 hp...shorties will give ya about 10-15....

W/ the Long tubes you'll need a y pipe w/ is 250 bucks but can be made custom w/ the shorties you can run a stock Y

LT's a 'bit' louder than shorties....they open your exhaust farther than shorties do...

well it depends on how far your gonna go with your mods. with long tubes your gonna spend more for the header itself and then the y pipe. you also have to take into consideration for ride hieght. many people manage to be okay but there are some that scrape the hell out of there LTs, if not the LT then the y pipe. you also cant run cats(from what i knwo of anyway).

with shorties you can go with 1 5/8 or 1 3/4. i think macs are the only mid lenght header for our cars, but they are 1 5/8. personally i recomend the 1 3/4. SLP, AS&M, RKsport. are theones i know of. try and stay away from headers that use your stock y pipe as you wont see much gain form headers. the one i would run would be SLP 93-95 style headers, they come with a good y pipe.

i wouldnt waste money on highflow cats, try an rig up a off road pipe at your local shop to swap in/out the stockers.

i did some research. alot of ppl say that shorties are waste of money. and mid lenghts are ok. but Lt's are the ultimate choice. so is it possible for me to get LT's and hook em up to my borla catback? if yes do i need a new ypipe? how bout the cats? what kind of extra hp would i get from this complete setup? another question .. why do they call em offroad?? my car is at stock height. would i have any clearence problems??
can someone also gimme the part # for the LT and then ypipe and whatever else i would need.
thanx alot.

I've been told 94-95 headers are more efficient than the 96-97. You can install 94-95 headers if you get the y- pipe too. Now you have a 96 with a full 94-95 exhaust.

Hooker Longtubes are the best header to get. You loose a little ground clearance with these but if your stock height you will be okay. Just slow down for speed bumps. Do a search I have seen a lot of pictures on here and I will put some of mine up with the lt's and duals this week. Mac shorties is the 2nd favorite on here. The have great plug access and are a good price. With Hooker Lts you need a y pipe. Mufflex y-pipes cost $200-250 I am not sure, anyway most people have problems with them so I cant help you with that since I dont have a y-pipe. The hp gains from Hooker headers and Borla are about 30-45 hp. Lets just say it will be noticable. You also said about a high flow cat. The hooker longtubes are not emissions legal but they can pass depending on how strict your state is. The reason is because it moves the position of the cat around. If you dont have emissions dont bother with a cat. Just make sure you get your Hooker coated by jet hot or something so they dont rust. Jet hot also is now selling a header that is bascially a rip off of the hooker. Check the Group buy section on this board. Hooker LTs are always on there

I live at North York (GTA) If U wana call #416-665-8447
I bought it from Musle motors, at that time I was in Texas.
Only thing you have to worry about is AIR injector nipples. 96-97 are different from 94-95. Other then that is easy.
I gain some good numbers Here is the Link
