It'd be nice if you elaborated on your problem a little more. Are your plug wires burning?

If your headers are glowing, then you are either running extremely lean or have a clogged cat(s) or obstruction in the exhaust.

I agree, check your cats. Shouldn't be more than 1-2 PSI of pressure just before the CAT I believe.

if your headers are glowing! i would say you have a timing issue..happened when my stang jumped a tooth on the timing..my header was so hot and bright orange it lit up my engine compartment (at night)..needless to say i ended up cracking the head..

I'd bet that you are running extremly rich. You would know if your cat was clogged. Like mine is right now

Have you heard any strange rattling in your exhaust? Is your exhaust tone muffled at all? Those are indications of a clogged cat. So if you don't have either of those problems, look into your air/fuel ratio.

Yeah, I always thought glowing was from rich, not lean. Excess fuel igniting in the heated pipes causes more heat.

^That is right. Although it would seem a lean condition could cause that as well, if the temps were high enough. But I would bet a rich condition first. Especially if the wires were arching and the plugs not getting the full current. The timing shouldn't have changed without programming.

Check for vacuum leaks or unhooked vacuum hoses first.

We just had a similar problem with my friends supercharged Z, the injectors were too small, they maxed out at 100% at about 3500rpms and the headers glowed from it being way to lean

Supercharged...whole different set of circumstances for a/f tuning.

A lean motor runs hotter than a rich motor.
I dont think a rich condition could cause that.
most likely a clogged cat or timing isssue

Re: headers way to hot,, glowing,, help

Yes as mentioned above, its running lean if your headers are glowing. A good example is im a pilot, and when your flying piston engine aircraft, once to cruising altitude, you set your EGT, (exhaust gas temp.). The richer the aircraft is running the cooler the EGT will be. You can lean the engine and watch the EGTs just climb and climb until the engine almost starts to stumble or lose power, which is when it simply isn't getting enough fuel to run properly... This is the point at which the EGTs are the hottest.

Re: headers way to hot,, glowing,, help

Lean mixtures make EG temps go up because it doesn't have the extra fuel to cool the cylinder down in between

Re: headers way to hot,, glowing,, help

^That's why guys with turbos use EG (exhaust gas) gauages instead of Air/Fuel gauges.........they are a way better way to tell if you are leaning out and by how much. It gives you more of an idea how much it's leaning out
