Headers???

ok, as some of you know, im young, and learning about these cars. i have a 94 Camaro Z28 A4 with 145000 miles on it.... ive been trying to figure out what im gonna do with this car. so my next set of questions is.... about headers.
Which headers are best... short, mid, or long tube? or is there a best? loudest? most hp gain? all those kinda things, hopefully i can get a pretty good summary of headers in this thread, and your help is highly appreciated.

+1 for hooker long tubes

Seriously though Pacesetters are pretty good headers for the money also. Long tubes are definitely better than mids or shorties. Also, some people may disagree but I recommend wrapping hte headers before you put them on. Some auto parts stores sell header wraps that look like rolls of wide cloth. It is probably a smart move to avoid possibly burned plug wires and keep the heat down in the engine compartment. I know alot of people don't use it but after having burnt a plug wire or two i think it is a good investment. Especially if you have aftermarket plug wires.

I don't think wrapping headers is a good idea. Just keep all your wires and hoses away from them and you should be ok.JMHO

Wrapping the headers can result in an underhood fire if oil is dripping on it anywhere...and if you have a pass side valve cover breather, oil will drip on it.
The only place I suggest any kind of wrapping is on the outside most tube on the pass side that goes down right beside the ABS and some other wires almost touching the shock tower.
If concerned about underhood heat, get headers that are ceramic coated, which will be a little more $$.

Like everyone is saying if you can get away with longtubes where you live go with them instead of shorties. Hooker/Jet Hot (basically the same design) are some of the better brands. Pacesetters are cheaper and will give you the same power, but you might run into fitting issues, or subpar build quality when compared to other name brands. There are tons of people that have them and have no problems at all, but you get what you pay for. Dont wrap them, get the highest temp grade ceramic coating you can and youll be fine. As far as plug wires, Id get the Over the Valve Cover wiring kit and you may as well do plugs and wires when you do the headers. Arizona Speed and Marine make some good mid length headers, if you cant pass emissions.

Yea if your in FLA then your straight for emissions. As for what headers you get it depends on how much you want to spend. Hooker and Jet Hot will run about $600 for coated longtube headers and ypipe. I think my Jet Hots were $550-$600, I cant remember, but you get a discount if you mention this website. Kooks headers will run you up over a grand, you have to make the determination if its worth the extra money. SLP Loudmouth is a good system, and if you dont want it really loud which it will be, then you can get the loudmouth II. www.ls1sounds.com that site has a lot of clips. The SLP system shouldnt be anymore then $350-400. Gut the cat too, u dont need it anyway.

what part of Florida do you live in, I'm in the central part south of orlando. I've been wondering the same thing wih the headers, cept I was thinking the pacesetters were a little better tan the hookers, guess that was wrong. How are the hookers/jet hots as far as fitment and ability to get to the spark plugs, and are the kooks that much better to be woth the $400+? sorry to kinda jack the thread.

Another newbie wondering about installation. I know everyone is different depending on speed and style of how they work on vehicles but how much crap do you have to get out of the way to take care of this. Also does anyone have any experience with the magnaflow stainless exhaust kit that they make for LT1's. Thanx

I recommend Ceramic coated Pacesetter Longtubes. $550 bucks with Y-pipe, no ground clearance issuses, made in the USA and longtubes are a good bang for the buck. The exaust is going to make the car quiet or loud I have SLP two on the left sounds great. My buddy has a hooker catback I like the way that sounds a little on the louder side but tuned. Think it was like $500 also.

NEVER wrap coated headers. They will retain too much heat and become brittle and crack.
