Headers

How long does it take to put in longtubes? Are there any brands i should avoid? How long until shorty headers become a restriction?

Re: Headers

do some searches for Long tube install, and mid-length header install, they are about the same all in all, its just lontubes have a different Y pipe because the drivers collector comes straight back instead of routing below the oil pan. shorties are not really a "restriction" no mater what you are making your engine breath better. i have a set of AS&M they are 1 3/4" primaries... unlike most of the shorties that are 1 5/8" primaries.
most say longtubes are better but i have seen peopel pushing 600+ HP to the rear wheels on the AS&M's

Re: Headers

There are some good mid length headers, but I would never buy shorties again. Longtubes make more power and are typically easier to change plugs with.

Ive owned just about all types of headers (except the high dollar ones.. kooks, FLP), I vote Pacesetter Long Tubes or Mac Mid Length. Get them coated as well, it is worth it.

Is it better to get them coated myself? Or order them coated?

Re: Headers

I'd order whatever headers you want straight through jet-hot and they'll ceramic coat them. I'm in the process of installing headers, it took me about 11 hour's to get everything off.It can be done faster then that but i wasen't in a hurry and i was taking my time not wanting to mess up anything plus like 7-10 of my friends were at my house at one point for a few hour's so i got easily distracted at times but it was nice to have them around. I'm going with jet-hot coated mac mids just becasue of the good ground clearance and i like the idea of how everything just bolts up, you can run a y-pipe with a cat for emissions and then the rest of the year you can run a off-road pipe with a cutout or whatever else you want to do. Seriously taking everything off your car isn't all that hard it's just time consuming, i haven't installed my headers yet so i can't comment on that. A few things that are a must for a header install are
A. A lot of diffrent tools (extensions, breaker bars, swivels, deep and shallow sockets, offset wrenches, some people use air tools (i did'nt) the better assortment of tools you have the easier the job will be.
B.Anti Sieze, Pb blaster this stuff is a must to get bolts that are rusted or just plain stuck.
C. Some people to help, it's really boring installing headers by yourself and your friends can help you get it done faster or atleast keep you entertained.
Now of course there's other things you'll need but after taking everything off my car i found the above items to be pretty helpful or needed.

Re: Headers

MY biggest problem was that I went into doing it thinking it would take for ever. Try not to get frustrated. Nopw that I've done it, I think ti is possible to be done in less than 6 hours. Do it with a positive attitude, and walk away fro a sec if you get upset, which you will...****ing header bolts..

Re: Headers

Thanks for the great advice...I know what you mean by walking away and taking a break I did spark plugs and wires change it took me forever. Somthing so simple like just not being able to reach a plug was so frusterating and having to do one from above then climb under the car and back and forth was a huge pain. Being a Dual cat car will MAC mids work on my car? I am following what this guy did you are using MAC's and so did he so they must be good----- http://fastblackcar.com/

Re: Headers

LT's aren't the hardest thing to do, like said above take your time and have patience. Also i'd most highly recomend getting the coated or buying a set of Jet-Hots with the coating already on them.
