Header options...

I am looking into getting headers for my 97 Z28...i am looking at the Pacesetter long tubes with an off road y-pipe...i just want to know from people who have used them how god they are and maybe other possible header options...and on more thing...since my car is a 97, it has dual cats, and the exhaust runs just like a 98+...so should i get the y-pipe for 93-97 or one for 98+...any input would be greatly appreciated...

Re: Header options...

Pacesetter makes good, affordable headers but they seem to have quality control issues. Some people say they go in easy, others have to grind a little bit, mine went in pretty easy, no grinding. Just make sure you get them ceramic coated.

I made my own Y-pipe so I can't help you there

Re: Header options...

Mine were a breeze to put in. I am using the 93-97 Y-Pipe on mine and I don't have any issues with clearance at all. Some people say the y-pipe isn't worth it, but it worked out fine for me. Putting CATS in later might be a little difficult, but it can be done with some mini cats or something from Pypes, etc.

Re: Header options...

I used the Pacesetter and am pretty happy with the quality and the price. As for the y-pipe, neither a stock style 93-97 or a 98+ is going to be compatible with the long tubes. You are going to have to get the Pacesetter ORY y-pipe as well or have something fabbed up. As stated above, cats. will be difficult to run on the ORY pipe, but it is possible. I did it with a pair of Pypes mini-cats.

Re: Header options...

You'll have to get the 93-97 y-pipe as the 98 headers are different. If you need cats its not that hard to put them in to the ORY. Heres the link to that http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409624

Hey guy I am going through the same thing and it is getting to be very frustrating. Here is what i think I am going to do is not go cats. Long tube pacesetter ceramic of course, i know a guy who has them and said there a peace of cake to install no harder than any other, shorties or mids. get the 02 eliminators than either off road y-pipe or duals that is where i am at. Let me know what you decide

Later

Re: Header options...

pacesetter definatly has quality control issues. ive been doing my install for months, (my cars at my dads work and i can only work on weekends, and i also work on weekends so i have very little time. ikts also my first header install, and prolly guna b my last hahaha) my driver side fits perfectly, no rubbing whatsoever. My first passengerside one was defective. It was rubbing on the motor mount a ton. Header flange wouldnt even come close to the head. Also it was rubbing part of the tranny, theres a little flap of excess metal that sticks off it. And also the EGR hookup wasnt lining up.

So i had them send me a new set of headers. This Egr wont hook up either. It rubbed the motor mount a little, but i grinded the mount a tiny bit and its good now. One of the primarys was touching the upsidown U pipe for the A/c, so that had to be pried towards the engine a little bit. Easy fix there. Now the other issue i must fix is the collector on the passenger side is touching the floorboard. So that should get pried down a little i think so it doesnt rub. Im very weary about putting the new motor mounts in because i think that would just make it raise up more and rub even more. GRRRRRRR. if u get pacesetters hopefully you dont run into the problems ive ran into. o ya i couldnt get the egr to line up so i bought blockoff plates cuz this is taking way too long. i gotta get this thing running before my dad moves his shop. lol

Re: Header options...

Yes getting the egr tube to line up was a big pain for me also.

One question is how did you get in contact with pacesetter. I have send them 3-4 email over the past 2 weeks and have heard nothing.

My passenger side header flange was not lineing up with the head either anbd im trying to get that fixed through pacesetter.

So its a pretty good header for the money. But yes they do have some quality issues to work out along with some CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Re: Header options...

Im doing my header install and I am removing the EGR tube and blocking off the intsake.
Doing this will not only get ride of the EGR codes when the thing wears out again but it will reduce the chance of the intake oil leak which luckily I have never had.
I have my PCM programmed to kill off the EGR.

Re: Header options...

I went through the place i ordered them from, and he got me new ones some how. (byunspeed.com) Very good guy. He even contacted me at my house after leaving him some emails.

Anyone have any ideas on how i should fix the rubbing on the bottom of the car at the collector. Should i try prying it down? I saw some threads before where people had to do this.

Re: Header options...

I have a set of pacesetter ceramic coated lt headers and y-pipe for sale for a 93-97. *no egr or air*
These are new in the box they were shipped in.
Shoot me a pm if instered

As far as the clearence issue, if you have good motor mounts there are almost no problems.

The only issue with my install was getting the car high enough, but I did it by myself over one weekend.

Be prepared. you are gonna need:
beer
tobacco produce of choice
good set of tools
small hands
band-aids
good place to do it
lift if possible (I mananged witout)

thats about it

Re: Header options...

with headers i plan on removing the EGR and AIR, so any issues with those im not concerned...only thing that bugs me is that im not sure which model of a y-pipe to use...plus i think the 93-97 one isnt an ORY...ill just call up Pacesetter to double check...alos, for Pacesetters is it really necessary to go ceramic, or can i get with non-coated header?

Re: Header options...

Ceramic coaters significantly drop engine bay temps. Night and day difference with coated versus non-coated.

I have a 97 just like yourself...I used the Pacesetter 93-97 ORY with the long tube headers. Pacesetter only makes one y-pipe for their LTs and it is the ORY. As for the ceramic coating, it is well worth the extra money. I don't think you want to be looking at some ole rusty headers in a few months after all the hard work necessary to install them.
