Header help

I really want to get the SLP shorties/midlengths for my 96 LT1, and was wondering if anyone knew somewhere besides LS1speed.com to purchase them. And was also wondering plug access and install are with these headers. LS1speed.com sells them for $450ish and it doesnt come with a y-pipe. I know Summit Racing has started to carry SLP products, but am not sure if they carry LT1 headers. Their catalog shows LS1 headers. I live right by Summit Racing, so it would be great if they carried them. I think I might give them a call. I was also interested in the Mac midlengths, but I really havent found a good price on them, I think 800 dollars with the 96-97 set-up which I need to keep due to emissions in my county. They visually inspect everything. Thanks for anyhelp at all.

Re: Header help

I wouldn't waste your money on anything but longtubes. I've seen a few LT1s with shorties that have seen absolutely zero gain...

There might be a site in there. Oh and for sure get the headers, but make sure you get a y-pipe too. Saying zero gain with headers and y-pipe is just bs, I have never heard of that in my life.

94Z28rag, you might want to do a little research on this board before you give such slanted reply's.

For the original question. The plug access isn't that great from what I've seen, but certainly better than stock. You can also buy them directly from www.slponline.com

Dan...Can I step in here? Um...MAC mid lengths/stock bottom end/full weight/smog legal...It runs 12.0 @ 112.3 MPH with a 1.67 60 ft. time on street tires I really don't think the mid lengths are holding me back...LOL
As for plug access? With my MACs, I changed the plugs in mine, Friday, in an hour.

Re: Header help

Well, from what I can see, the 96-97 SLP shorties retain the factory y-pipe. I know there are some 96-97 dual cat y-pipes out there, but will they bolt up to the SLP shorties/midlengths (not sure which they are lol) I am pretty sure I want to go with the SLP headers, just not sure what y-pipes to consider, back to search/researching lol. Thanks everyone.

Re: Header help

for what you would spend on shorties headers you may as well spend the extra cash and get mid lengths or long tubes i put edlebrock shorties on the 97 i had and it was a pita ill never do shorties on a dual cat car again

long tubes are great but if yur car is lowered the you may drag them

Just out of curiousity, what has you "zeroed in" on SLP headers? The MAC headers come with a y-pipe for the same price as SLP's without one.

Re: Header help

I've got Edlebrock Shorties...ummhh yeah, the y-pipe doesn't bolt up, so now I have it y-ing into a 3inch pipe going strait out the back...the Borla's don't stop much w/out the plate, it sounds like Bubba's truck!!! At any rate, make sure it comes w/ a y-pipe and go with headers that have some clearance. Not just for changing plugs, but consider what the heat does as well. You get shorties you need small fingers, you get long tubes, well, a couple guys got 'em down here and deal w/ excessive heat. The Mac's sound like they're very functional.

Re: Header help

My slanted reply is not without first hand experience. I installed the SLP shorties on my buddies 97 Z and at both dyno and track he saw absolutely ZERO gain, even with tuning. After about 6 months of them on his car he's looking to upgrade to longtubes asap.

Now, like i said, i personally feel that they are a waste of money from my personal experience with this setup. When you couple this with a pricetag that's neck and neck with that of, say, Jet-Hot longtubes, especially since these have emission hookups too, I will once again say that it would appear a rather large waste of money for only shorties. But, hey, to each his own.

On a side note, i have experience with MACs, and they seem to work very well, friends have seen gains of over 2 tenths with the headers and y-pipe combo. Sorry for not being specific and opening myself up to the flaming.

Lets not forget that not everyone has the option of going longtubes for emmissions sake as well.

If you're really trying to meet emissions and know you'll have a visual inspection, you have no option other than shorties that line up with your stock y-pipe. Both midlengths and longtubes will move the cats, which won't be legal, and certainly could be spotted in the smog check.

Re: Header help

Thanks for everyones input, the SLP just seems like a good idea. I believe when they visually inspect things they just check to see if two cats are there. Where could I find the MAC headers and y-pipe for the same price? It has to be the dual cat y-pipe, or be able to bolt to the stock one. Because I dont really want to spend 550 dollars on Random Tech's dual cat y-pipe. The cheapest I found the Macs with dual cat y-pipe is 750 dollars I believe, if you could direct me to the dual cat system for 450 dollars I will buy them. Thanks again everyone.

Re: Header help

Well, I assume that you have dual cats? So if you want to stay with dual-cats, the SLP shorties will bolt up with your current Y pipe.

Probably safe to assume that going with LTs or a custom header would be preferable to the SLP shorties BUT...if you are not allowed to move your cats location or go from dual to single then your options are limited.

Why don't you see if you can locate some SLP shorties (someone just mentioned that their friend is about to get rid of his "because of the 0 gain".

Pick up a set of used ones, make sure the flanges are straight and that the EGR tube is located in the right direction.

If you get a good set of used ones that are not coated. Get them coated (after you make sure the EGR is welded at the correct angle, since you can't weld over the coating.

The SLPs are 1 3/4 which I believe is better than the 1 5/8 offered by most. JMHO

I feel i didnt gain crap from shorties. I DID gain about .2 tenths, but I did shorties and PCM4less tune at the same time. And I feel pcm4less gave me the power lol.

I hope to be upgrading to LTs soon
