head thread striped

i bought new heads from this site and my last head thread on the passanger side is striped and also the third thread on same side. its the one that bolts the manifold on. i already put the head on the engine in my car.

i read a few threads on this but i am still unsure on how to fix the thread. do i have to take the head out? what do i have to buy to fix? and, how to you fix it? is this a fairly easy job to do? i am sure i have other questions but i cant think of them right now.

any advice would be great! thanks

You need a Helicoil Kit of the appropriate size. I have fixed stripped threads in Aluminum with Helicoils, and that is the typical method. If you can find room to get tools in there you can do it on the car. A right-angle air drill with a shortened bit will work in very tight quarters.

Example:http://www.plymouthlaser.com/heli.htm

I am assuming you mean exhaust. Could do intake on car too but don't get any chips in there! Grease on the tap helps catch all the chips.

Good luck.

nah, its the intake manifold. where do i get the kit at? at a parts store like auto zone? is there a way that i could limit the amount of metal shards that get into the engine?

pull the intake off.....but an old sheet or something in there and tape off the intake ports......carquest or napa should have the kit you need take an intaqke bolt with you.....a kit will come with thread tap, helicoils a drill bit and an install tool.......some people put threadlock on the helicoil so it won't back out when you take the bolt out.

Good luck, its a pretty simple fix

you don't need to pul the head...just the intake. and keep everything clean.

The good kits run about $40 or so.....I would get the kit that has everything in it...bit,tap, etc.

The cheaper ones are a pain if you have never done it before

are you sure i wont have to pull it? there are 2 threads that are striped. the one on the back and the 3rd one both on the passanger side. it is kinda deep in the firewall.

As long as you can get to it and do the work, the head can stay were it is. You must be able to drill straight and carefully.

It is very important that you drill straight like shoebox said so take your time.

man did you take the bolt with you when you got the kit??????????

ITS a 3/8" bolt slim....it can be fixed, but damn its important to take your time with this stuff......take it as a lesson learned.

Just pull it and take it to a machine shop and get them to fix it

3/8-16 for intake and exhaust manifold bolts. 7/16-14 is for the bolts in the block that hold the head to it. Dang, who told you to get a 7/16 helicoil? Couldn't you tell it was way too big?
