Head porting help
Head porting help
I have a Crane Cams 227 cam (210/114-112LSA). I also have a blown head gasket I need to replace so I'm considering porting the stock heads or purchasing new heads. Can I expect to pay about $250 for ported heads? That would be ideal but I don't know of any local shops. Also, how much do the stock heads need to be ported to match up to the 227?
$250 wont buy you much. Easily spend more than that on a good valve job and milling to make sure they are flat.
Sounds like porting is out of the question for now, I would just get them inspected with a hardness cheack and have them lightly milled to ensure they are flat and bolt them back on. The factory valve job is pretty good so I would not mess with it unless you are diving deeper into the heads.

They should, but not if they are SBC Gen I. Plus your heads would bolt on to a 383 stroker, so they might be the same thing.
Personally you seem way in over your head you need to just put the cam in and wait till you know what your doing. If not there is a good chance you'll be posting in here with a blown motor.

I'd go with an LE budget ported head before I went to just any machine shop i could find unless they have a good reputation for porting heads in your area with cnc machine capability. For all the new parts etc. $800 is a good deal. If you can afford the extra $100 for the extra flow of the LE1 head I'd do that. Since he is a supporting vendor you can check out his porting at http://www.elliottsportworks.com/lt1.html G/L.
