Head Gaskets and Head bolts?????

I'm going to be installing my heads next week and I have a couple Questions...
What head gaskets should I use?? I already purchased some felpro head gaskets, but I'm wondering if the factory GM ones are better????
Also, what is the stuff called that I need to coat the headbolts with before you torque them down???

Thanx in advance

Although I used GM gaskets, I haven't heard of any problems with the Felpros.

As for the head bolts, you're looking for thread sealant.

I'd stick with the Fel-pro 1074s. As far as stuff to coat the head bolts... ARP says to use their moly lube. I ended up using their bolts with the common, white thread sealer and have had no problems so far.

Another vote for Felpro 1074s. As far as the head bolts go, I recommend teflon based thread sealant for the threaded end of the bolts and ARP lube for the head/washer of the bolts. The sealant is to prevent a coolant leak if the tapped holes happened to break through a water passage. The lube provides proper torquing as the head/shoulder portion of the bolt will bind on the top of the head giving you a false torque reading. You'll also want to chase your threaded holes to clean them out (helps prevent false torque readings). A set of ARP head bolts are cheap insurance for $50.

Thanks for the pn, I'm getting ready to do ported heads/intake & cam on a stock shortblock and want a slight compression bump.
Hey you wouldn't happen to know the bore diam on these, are they 4.1 or 4.125 like the Felpros?

Who has used that .026 head gasket?
I need that because when my heds were ported they increased the size of my combustion chambers by 2cc and lowered my compression ratio.

How long have you been using those gaskets, what kind of power are you making and has anyone had any problems with them?

Thanks

i'm using them and have over 700 miles on the new topend

no problems yet (knocks on wood)

stock deck height, heads milled .010" and .026" Mr. Gasket puts me at about 11.1-1

bigger valves in the heads and no clearance problems
dont know what kind of power yet but its making some

ya I bet you are making some power. Seems like a lot of people are getting cams from Joe.

I have a solid roller on the way from him and had his friend do my heads and intake.
Let us know if you dyno that.

I got a custom Comp cam new in the box from the for sale board 227 - 227 .560/.560 112lsa with 1.6 rockers, this should give a little more power than the Hot cam. I'm also adding RKSport 1 3/4" headers/Random Dualcat Ypipe, CSI wp, R-Series lifters, Extreme timing set, Canton oilpan/pump and replacing all gaskets and seals. I ported the heads and intake myself so I don't have flow#'s. With these mods and a custom tune I'm hoping for 360 -390 rwhp but we'll see once everything is done in a few weeks.
Does anyone think I'll make the target?
