Ok, so I have an exhaust leak. There is a bolt broken off in the head. The only way to get it fixed is to pull the head and take it to the machine shop. So if I pull the heads is it mandatory that I have them machined in any way other than having the broken bolt removed since they aren't warped or anything?

 

I personally wouldn't do anything you don't have to, just get the bolt removed.

 

If they are straight, there is no need for anything else to be done with them. I think if they need to be decked...they need to be both done at the same time(can't do just one...but I'm not certain).

When reinstalling the head, just be sure the block and head surfaces are as clean as possible. Do not use anything abrasive to clean the surfaces. I gently used a razor and lacquer thinner to clean my block and heads. Many people have stated not to use a steel razor on aluminum heads, because the razor can gouge the surface. This is very true, but I found that if you are very careful not to dig in with the corners of the razor it works well(razor must lay perfectly flat across the surface...you will develop a feel for when the razor is laying correctly).

There may be a better(safer) way to clean the surfaces, so hopefully others will chime in.

 

i say not to do it, just get your bolt removed and be done with it,, no need in the extra $$$$ spent if its not needed.
