Head Gasket Damage
Head Gasket Damage
Hi all,
Has anyone seen damage to the metal fire rings on the head gaskets? I am seeing damage (rust and short thin cracks) on the forward edges of the fire rings for cylinders 1 and 2 and rear edges of cylinders 7 and 8. The damage on 8 was severe enough to allow coolant into the cylinder and combustion gasses into the cooling system (the engine failed a block test and my coolant was disappearing). It looks like these areas on the gasket don't have the additional layers the other areas do that have contact with coolant, the coolant seeped through and got to the fire ring. The car also sat without driving most of the last couple years. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Head Gasket Damage
It's really common. The fire ring on number 7 on my engine split and a part of it oozed out into the combustion chamber. Lots of coolant in the sump.
Surface the heads, Felpro gaskets, new bolts, and hope for the best.
