I would say you are wrong based on giving him an answer with none of the important info needed first.

When building the engine there had to be a target compression ratio, what gasket measurements were used to determine it?

The stock gasket is .049, the Felpro is .039, the LT4 .051, Mr Gasket and Victor Rienz offer .026, the b-body gasket is .029. This stuff affects compression ratio and intake mating to the heads.
On a fresh build I would look to get a great finish on the heads and block and consider a Cometic, they are reusable but are picky and need a certain level of finish to seal well.

So what thickness should i go for for high compression?

Re: Head gasket??

The thinner the head gasket the higher the compression. But, you also have to consider the quench area. With regard to quench, I know it exists and is a critical element to getting a car to run well, but that's about it. I leave all that kind of computing and decision making to the pro's . It's fun for beginners to assemble an engine, but to get a good result don't pick your own parts.

Re: Head gasket??

If the block has a stock deck height go with .026" Mr. Gasket head gaskets or GM .029" Caprice/Impala SS gaskets. If it was zero decked, Fel-Pro .039" gaskets is a good choice.

Re: Head gasket??

Thought i would just say this..wen i bought the heads i was reading on the specs this "special 0.050 in. flat milled surface to increase compression"

Re: Head gasket??

You have some measuring to do .050 is a large amount and compression could get excessivly high if your parts don't compliment it.

Re: Head gasket??

I'm kinda in the same boat here, I think i'm having a seal problem with the cometic head gaskets. Coolant is leaking into the oilpan from somewhere under the heads. I have a question as well under this subject, would LT4 head gaskets work on a 4.030 bore 396 setup?

Re: Head gasket??

A thicker head gasket is not a good way to lower compression because it increases quench height which reduces combustion efficiency.
