Head Gasket

Can the head gasket be replaced with the engine still in the car? I dont know if there is enough clearance to get the intake off and get at all the bolts to do a head gasket. Just wondering because i have coolant in #5 and #7 cylinders Any input on this project will be apreciated.

Yes, you can do it in the car. There's probably some detailed instructions on the F-body install/fix-it guides.

Re: Head Gasket

It's really not that hard to do in the car.......probably the hardest part is taking off the stock manifolds to get the heads off.......

I sure hope so. I got my heads off with the engine still in the car, so I'm assuming I can get them back in again.

Re: Head Gasket

yeah, its definitely possible to get the heads out with the engine in the car still. its not hard dropping the engine out either if thats an option at all. i did it the for the first time a few months ago and wasnt that hard. a few hours to get it out. but probably save my back from killing me. either way you go, make sure you clean the head bolt threads in the block before reassembling it (use a thread chaser). i would also recommend getting new head bolts too (i would go with arp bolts and arp sealant). use thread sealant on the head bolts before putting them back in. also, make sure you get the torque pattern for the bolts as well (same for the intake). can find in an auto book from autozone. will come in handy anyways.

hmm, this might be a good time to invest in a stress ball too. any other questions, let us know.

read some good info on shoebox's page as well.
