Re: Head bolts

When I did my head gaskets on my Z last year I used ARP bolt sealer, I purchased the sealer from Thunder Racing at the same time I purchased the ARP head bolts.

When I torqued the heads down I torqued them to 35 Lbs. first, then final torque was 65 Lbs. There are other torque procedures out there but that worked fine for me.

Re: Head bolts

The Felpro Bolts I got from Discount Auto already had thread sealant on them. And for torquing I did 22, 45, 65 lbs.

You can't reuse the factory bolts. Get some ARP's and use their thread lube,no sealant needed.

Arp here. The head bolts are 1 thing i would not cut corners on, especially if you are going to be spraying.

Question for ya...Why is sealant not needed on bolts, but REQUIRED on studs? (Before you say it's not, I have 10 leaking studs that didn't seal right saying otherwise )

Re: Head bolts

Dave I answered that on your original post. Studs do not have the twistind force on the threads to seat them. They just have upward force.
I always use locktite on studs and torque them up for 24 hrs to set and have never had a leaker. That is after tapping the holes and wire brushing the threads on the bench grinder.
The bolts have a twisting force plus the upper thrust.Bolts smoothe the thread to thread contact and seal.On bolts I have never used anything but ARP friction lube and have never had a leaker. In the old days I used nothing and pulled them to 110 ft lbs on a SBC and never had a leaker.

Re: Head bolts

Thanks for answering again, I kinda forgot about that thread as my head was in a different state of mind after it started leaking. I'll search back and reread about that, thanks.

You're saying that with the studs, you put the loctite on them, then the heads, torqued them down, and let it set like that for 24 hrs right?

Yes and with a old gasket.Your choice of Locktite but I use the super RED thread lock or Green bearing mount if the studs won't have to come out anytime soon(need to be heated to 300*).This is to seat the threads and makes sure the studs line up with the heads. You will have a hard time getting the head on and off over the studs if you don't.
Screw the studs in finger tight and back them out 1/4 turn so the shoulder isn't bottomed out on the block.
