Have trans out, how to tell if throw out bearing is bad?

Hey guys I have been having some trouble with my trans. It grinds sometimes while letting out the clutch in first gear. But i doesn't do it all the time if I keep the RPM below 1500 or launch from above 3000. I still have to get the clutch assembly out. But from what I can see (tans and bellhousing are out) the throw out bearing doesn't look messed up in any way. Is there away to tell without replacing it?

thanks
Tom

Not that i know of. Unless it is really obvious. I would take off the clutch and inspect it. Are you getting a new clutch? Because both clutches i have gotten came with a new throwout bearing pre installed.

No I am not getting a new clutch unless there is something wrong with it. It doesn't slip and doesn't have that many miles on it. Unless a spring or something else on it is messed up it will be going back in.

thanks

I've driven cars with bad throwout bearings and they go GRRRRRRR anytime the clutch is pushed in, in gear or not. I bet you are hearing the infamous low gear rattle that is normal for a T56, not an actual grind. Don't worry about it.
