Has anyone switched rear ends?

I have an oppotunity to get a 02 SS complete rear end w/brakes from a freind. It has ABS and ASR. My 95 only has ABS. Mechanically I know it will work but will there be issues with the wiring up the ABS ad TCS?

Inquiring minds want to know

Why would you swap rearends? Not to mention that your abs will no longer work, you are not increasing the strength of the rear by any.

I swapped my 94 out for a 2k TA rear with 3.42's. You will lose the ABS function in the rear, at least we didn't know how to get it to work. The brake line plumbing was a little odd but manageable.

Not sure about the strength issue, although i've always been told that the newer diffs are much stronger than previous years.

Probably cause he wants a gear change or something. A buddy of mine are doing the same thing with his car. He's going from 2.73's to 3.42's. It would be much easier and cheaper to just do a rear swap than to buy all the gears and installation kit and still pay someone to install em. That way if he does happen to snap the rear he'll have the stock one to swap back in temporarily. It's cheaper than a gear change and obviously cheaper than a 12 bolt.
Also I'm not sure on the abs/asr thing. I know there are different pin's on different years but have no idea which ones are which, someone else can chime in on that one.

You can do the swap but you will loose the abs. Reason is the reluctor ring for abs only in your existing rear is in the differential (one reluctor one sensor). The reluctor rings for the abs/tcs are on each axle (two reluctors and two sensors). In addition, tcs has a second brake line to the rear (one for each wheel). You will need to plumb a tee into the existing brake lines on the new axle or transfer your existing lines. Plus you'd need the tsc module that attaches to the abs module under the hood. I also believe that the electronics box that controls all this are different.

It's a good idea if as Jay-Roll says you are doing this for gear change or spare, as long as you can live without the abs, which many have done.

The rear im getting has 3.73's, 8000 miles only and has LS1 brakes. all for the price of $250. Cheaper than getting gears installed and what not. So screw the ABS huh..

Good buy. I paid $200 for mine installed and put new rotors and pads on it. Was worth the upgrade to me.
