Has anyone ever shipped an engine?
Re: Has anyone ever shipped an engine?
Never shipped an engine, but I have shipped two transmissions. I put them both on pallets and built a crate around them. I used Yellow Freight. They have a terminal right down the street from me so I dropped them off and the other guy picked them up at the closest Yellow Freight terminal. Saved a bunch of money that way.
Re: Has anyone ever shipped an engine?
I used Roadway Express to ship my block and rotating assembly parts from CA to CO for $60, then the full long block back for $90. Oops, I almost forgot to mention that my brother is a Roadway employee though...
Seriously though, the easiest way is to get a pallet, bolt the motor to it, then build the sides and top out of 1/2-3/4" plywood. You also have to empty all the fluids prior to shipping. Then take it down to a frieght loading dock (like Roadway Express or Yellow, etc.) and have it shipped directly to another dock and have the receiving party pick it up. Most shippers will load and unload it into a standard pickup truck using a forklift for you. I'd guesstimate about $220-250 to ship a longblock across the US...less if you're shipping shorter than that.

Re: Has anyone ever shipped an engine?
I shipped a complete ls1, from California, to Florida, across the USA for 180, using Forward Air. Anything you can fit on a pallet they ship. The thing is they only ship to an airport, the buyer is responsible for pickup.
Re: Has anyone ever shipped an engine?
I shipped a transmission through UPS for $100. It did only weigh like 130lbs though. I'm sure your engine will weigh more than that. I built a crate for it. Thats the easiest way.
