Harmonic Balancer Indexing?

I have heard that it is impossible (well, without machining or fabrication) to install the LT1's harmonic balancer incorectly. I have heard that the balancer will only go on the hub one way, or the bolt holes will not line up. I haven't checked this, or noticed this when building LT1's. Did I just get lucky each time, and put the balancer on the hub correctly, by coincidence? I'm assuming that the hub index on the crank snout doesn't matter due to lack of a keyway.

Any comments on this?

The pulley can only go on the hub one way. The spokes are not symmetrical. It's nice to have the hub indexed correctly, so that cylinder position can be easily determined. If there are no weights in the pulley holes, there is no real reason the hub has to go on in any certain position.

Thanks ShoeBox

By the way, what would be the purpose of one of these weights. Balancing of course, but what application would this be used for?
For use with a supercharger?

Apparently, some engines were tweaked at the factory by virtue of a weight or two. Most had no weights, but the factory manual says to keep it oriented like it came off if it does have weights or there may be some perceived vibration.
