Unhappy Harmonic Balancer

Does anybody know where I can buy a "jaw" puller to remove my harmonic balancer. I've been calling a bunch of places and no one seems to know what I'm talking about. Is there maybe a place online?

they only make 2 kinds. one looks like a claw (what i used) and one looks kinda like a birds foot. you will want to use the claw that has the 2 arms that pivot on and out with the screw in the middle. i bet autozone will loan you one.

The one that looks like a birds foot is the one I tried using with no luck. I tried autozone and they didn't know what I was talking about. They only knew of the one that looks like a birds foot.

Oh no, you just go back there and tell them you need a pulley puller or a gear puller. Wait I can even get you a part#...

Holy sh*t, this is my 100th post!

I got my Balancer off with a Pry bar and a few hammer taps.

Granted probably not the best way to do it. But my Balancer seperated (inner part from the outter part).. So I just got it off the only way I could.

AZ or any chain store should have a puller. This is what you want if you must use a puller.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! I FINALLY got that damn balancer off! I found the claw puller from the Autozone down the street. I called the guy on the phone and explained to him what I needed and when I got their he pulled out the same puller I had tried before. I thought it was hopeless but I spotted a picture of one the I needed on one of those little pads they have on the counter. Luckily it had a part number next to it.

I needed i bit more clearance for this puller so I removed the radiator fans and whammo! That sucker came off in just a few seconds! I'm so stoked! Thanks guys for a ll your help! I'll take some pictures and post them when I finish cuz I got a red powder coated Water pump and a CSI pump and if I can scrounge up some extra cash I want to get some braded steel hoses while I've already got everything taken apart! Havbe any of you used the hoses from Summit racing? Are they similar to the ones at Pep Boys or better? Thanks again everyone!

The correct leverage makes all the difference and you are right, it takes less than 30 seconds once you get it on there. It is a whole lot easier to have the right tool than to fight with it and break it or something else.

And hopefully you put the puller on as shown in shoebox' pic... [using the outer diameter can damage it..]

Of course I did. I wasn't able to get all 3 arms to fit so I thought about wrapping around the outer diameter but common sense kicked in and I decided to continue to grip from the inner diameter with the 2 arms. I was carefull to make sure the puller didn't get off center but the balancer came off before I had to worry about it =)

If it wasn't, our toolboxes would consist of a hammer, crescent wrench and a crow bar.
