Re: Hard starting..leaky injectors ?

How fast is fast? 20 minutes? 45? 60? If the fpr checked out ok then i'd say injectors. If you're fuel pump is going bad and having trouble maintaining pressure, then you wouldn't be able to slam on the gas. It would just fall flat on it's face. And about the car smoking while driving...really depends on how bad they are leaking.

Oh it bled most of the pressure off within 10 to 15 minutes. The guage start moving down as soon as the pump stopped.

Maybe it could be the pump...but still, it's a lot easier and cheaper to check the injectors first.

EDIT: If you dare (which i would because I'm stupid like that ), you can prime it, let it drain off, prime it, drain, so on and so on for a couple times so the cylinders would flood. Then try and start it, if you have to floor the gas while cranking the engine to clear it, i would definitely say injectors.

Hey Shibby...

Yea probably the pump. I was quote 600 for the pump swap.. in which the tech quoted that the stock fuel pump was 300 bucks!

I found a 255 walpro for 149.. and i'll just do the work myself.

If you're going to change the pumps, you are going to need to take the axle out. I heard another way of cutting a square in the back floor pan, where the backrest of the back seat is. I haven't tryed it because i haven't needed to, but it's just a thought if you don't want to take the axle out, and don't mind having a huge hole in the back of the car.

Re: Hard starting..leaky injectors ?

Just a question. Sometimes when i start my car after i have recently turned it off it wont crank, and i have to depress the gas in order for it to start. To me, this seems like the motor is being flooded, and i'm curing it by letting in more air for the spark to ignite the mixture. Would that be cause by a leaky injector? My car also runs SUPER rich.

I think i'm gonna go buy a Fuel Pressure Guage soon.

Possibly. Get a gauge and do what dubbsix has done. Can always lift the rails and check for leakage too.

Re: Hard starting..leaky injectors ?

One thing to check that has not been mentioned. The fuel pump relay.

If the fuel pump relay is bad, the fuel pump will not turn on untill there is oil pressure.

alot of people think the oil pressure switch turns off the fuel pump in the case of loss of oil pressure, but its just the opposit.

fuel pump relay being bad would cause an extended crank.

turn on the key, engine off, and listen for the fuel pump prime..does it happen?

good luck

Busta! good point..

One thing we did notice is that we couldnt hear the pump primming when we switched the key to the on position. We had to try a couple of times until we heard the pump turn on..

Of course this doesnt explain the quickly dropping fuel pressure does it?

Re: Hard starting..leaky injectors ?

i checked my injectors and they dont leak, and i checked my FPR, and there isnt any fuel on the vacuum line or anywhere around it...could it be bad spark plugs? also i know that there is a cracked exhaust manifold on this, could this do it...it has hard starts and fuel in the oil, and i am only getting 14-15 MPG, it is pretty much stock except for the Flowmasters and CAI, which should help my gas milage, i took it up to 120 mph..and i could feel it jerking like a spark was missing, so i think its time for new plugs...let me know, thanks

Re: Hard starting..leaky injectors ?

i've been having this problem for a long time, my car will start on the first try intermittently, but most times it takes a few turns of the key to do it. i'm also getting bad gas mileage, but its got a good size cam and 2800 converter.

mine will also hit once or twice and die when trying to start it and make a weird noise coming from the front driver's side around the fuse box area. it sounds like someone dropping change into a machine. i have a new walbro 255 pump, have made frequent fuel filter changes, and a holley adjustable regulator.

does anyone have any idea about the noise i'm hearing?

Seriously? You really have a problem. Well...I always like to start with the cheapest stuff first in hope of having it fix it. If you think it is missing, get new spark plugs, then coil, then opti. As for the fuel in the oil, I really have no clue.

well i think if the spark plugs arent burning all of the fuel, then it is leaking past the rings...just like leaky injectors...i think that the cracked Manifold is doing it, because the o2 sensor is telling it to send alot of fuel and is fouling the plugs...i bought a set of headers and new plugs...so hopefully this fixes it...opti was just replaced 15 k ago

I never thought of the cracked manifold doing it. It depends on how badly cracked it is though. If the crack is wide open then yeah, but if it's not even broken open it wouldn't do anything. Replace the manifold, get new plugs, change the oil, then see what happens.

Re: Hard starting..leaky injectors ?

Its definitely the fuel pump. Today i let it prim twice before trying to start it and it started right up. What causes the pump not to retain the fuel pressure? Is this a clue that the fuel pump is on its way out?
