hard starting

Hey everybody,
Got the hard starting problem again. Car turns over for 5-10 secs. before starting. Same thing happened a couple months ago after I ran out of gas and ended up replacing the fuel pump with a stock GM one (the access panel method) and the problem went away. Started again the other day, this time for no reason (such as running out of gas) although this time with different fuel pressure readings. This time it barely pumps up when the key is turned on for 2 secs. and then when it cranks up it only gets up to 30 psi and drops immediately to 0 when the car is shut off. Hard starts afterward too. The pressure reg. is dry when I pull the hose. I changed the fuel filter today with no difference. Runs fine, no rough idle, hesitation, etc. I hate to think the pump went bad already. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

2 other reasons for fuel pressure dropping off when the key is turned off are a sticky injector or a stuck check ball in the pump.

You could just have the injectors cleaned through the rail professionally or you could go looking for the critter yourself. You could unbolt the fuel rail and lift all the injectors out of the intake so you can see the nozzles. Prime the pump and be sure the pressure goes up and look at each of the nozzles to see if they drip.

Your symptom of hard starting sounds more like a leaky injector than a check ball problem since the injector will leak a puddle of fuel into the intake and it takes some cranking to finally draw it through and fire up. That and you just replaced the fuel pump. Another symptom is that usually if it sits for a couple of days, it will start quicker than if it just sat for a few hours since the fuel puddle is evaporating. Another symptom sometimes is that if you Floor the excelerator, (go into flooded mode) the engine starts quicker.

You may just want to get the injectors cleaned before tearing things apart and that may cure your problem.

Good luck
