Hard to start ONLY in the fog... hmm?

Well... if in the morning it's foggy or just very damp... the car wont start.. depending on how damp it is.. it may start up after 30 seconds of trying, or 10 minutes.. and sometimes not at all.. then it has to sit all day to dry then with will start.

I checked the plugs.. they aren't too bad.. not new of course (have never changed them in the year I've had the car) And I don't know when they were last changed by the other original owner.

Any suggestions as to the problem?? Thanks!

Trevor

As mentioned, sounds like moisture in the opti. Either it's cracked, or a vent hose is cracked, allowing moisture in. You could also have bad plug wires that are arcing out your spark.

I had that same problem, only not as severe as yours, mine would take a good couple tries cranking it over for 20-30 seconds and then it would start, but only in the fog. When it was dry outside(relatively dry, Houston is always super humid ) it would turn right over and run like a champ. I changed out my opti and now it starts and runs great, regardless of whether there is fog or not. Hope that helps some .

Damn.. lol I was really hoping it wouldn't be the opti but I had a feeling... It made the most sense. Well it's not very damp here.. excpecialy this time of the year now... so its not a super problem.

Any way I could check for cracks in my opti? Would it have to be an obvious crack or would a hairline fracture kind of thing do it?

Thanks

Check for corrosion on your spark plug wires and coil wires. I had a Toyota that would do the exact same thing. Foggy or raining mornings, it was near impossible to start. Turned out distributor cap terminals were corroded. Cleaned them with a wire brush, and it started fine.

A bit of dielectric grease on the terminals helps pevent corrosion.
