Guys With SLP LM Considering A Muffler- Here's What I Did....

I've heard of alot of guys replacing the resonator on the SLP LM cat back with a muffler of some sort. I liked my SLP ok at WOT as far as it being loud, but it wasn't really a clean loud. And around parking lots and just putting around in OD, it sounded like a boat.

Instead of going with a "straight through" muffler (which I don't understand why someone would do since that would be basically the same thing as the resonator), I decided on getting an actual muffler. And I decided to go with the Flowmaster 1 chamber race muffler. Let me tell you, it's the best thing I've done to the exhaust since I've had the car. The exhaust has MUCH more tone now and is deeper and throatier. It no longer has that pissed off Z71 sound It's still loud when you get on it, in fact prolly just as loud as it was, but it's just a "cleaner" loud. And when cruising through a parking lot or driving down the road in OD, it has a smooth, deep, civilized, rumble, and not a droning Merc 6 sound.

I just thought I'd share my new install for anyone else thinking about the same thing. I really enjoy the car alot more now and can't wait to drive it.

Any Qs feel free to ask!!

I never thought about that before!!! Good idea man. I was thinking of going with Dynomouth but I really like what you did there. Is it too loud? I know LM is very loud (never heard it in person though). Do you think it is "get pulled over" loud? I also like a good clean sounding muffler. How is it at different RPM's? Like on the highway, idle, and WOT. One last question: How much was everything (muffler and installation)? Thanks a lot!

The regular LM is VERY loud. Not only loud though, it's pretty open/boatty/trucky/raunchy/insert own negative word, when cruising around slowly or cruising down the road in OD.

After I put the muffler on, like I said, its got much more tone and rumble. It's still loud, but only when you get on it. It really opens up when you stomp on it. It has a good low rumble/growl when just putting around a lot or cruising down the freeway. It's alot quieter inside than it was, but still pretty loud outside.

As far as "police loud", I would say the original LM is definatly worthy of a ticket trophy, however I personally never had any problem with local law or never got pulled over. With the muffler, it still draws attention, but not as much and really only when you want it to. When just cruising by with the new set up, you hear a low rumble/growl, like your typical good sounding aftermaket exhaust. But when you stomp on it, you definatly hear it and it's almost as lound as it was before, but cleaner.

The price? Well, I bought my LM off the FS section here on Z28.com for 200 bucks. I ordered the muffler brand new through a buddy who owns a shop for $64.99, but I think they normally run around 79-80 bucks out of Summit/Jegs.

BTW, I also have gutted cats, so that prolly contributed to the loudness of the original LM and may have been the reason for some of the "raspyness" or "truck" sound I was getting. I have heard this exhaust on a LS1 car with cats (which is what this exhaust was originally was designed for btw), and I think it sounds great. But with what I had, and from what I've heard on here whith other LT1s, some type of muffler usually makes a world of difference.
