Guys with K&N FIPK...
I cut the bottom of the guard out, and screwed some SS screen to cover the hole. This way I still can get whatever "extra" air that might be available and also don't have to worry about loosing the filter. BTW, Only drive my car a couple thousand miles a year and not in wet weather. Works for me!
i just did the homemade ram-air. got a wedge shaped alum dryer vent scoop, cut a sm opening in the bottom of the airbox just 3" x 4", and screwed the scoop on there with a sqr of ss screen to block the big stuff. also had to cut about 5" off the end of the air dam to expose it
i can feel the diff, and i went to the track and did some 103s and even a 106.1 trap w/ no traction (might have been an error, surprised even me when i saw it)

I created a sealed plastic box around mine with a hinged panel on the bottom and an attached scoop with part of the air dam cut off.
Cold Air Ram and I can easily remove the filter for cleaning. I just push the filter back on with the snuggest fit possible and double check the next day to make it didn't fall off.
I don't think I'd want to drive through more than a couple of inches of water and turn my engine into a short lived water pump. Haven't had a problem with occasional rain, yet!
