i had 3.42s on my m6 stock, went to a 4.10 and am satisfied with it. was expecting a little more, but am still satisfied. speedometer needs some recalibration, im sure yours will too. go 3.73 if you definitely do not want a 4.10 i have an m6 so a 4.10 really isnt that big of a deal in 6th gear, might be a little different on an a4

I am selling my 3.42's in the for sale section here in hope to pick up some 3.73's. I did not want to have a louder car ont the interestate...what i realized was that at 80 mph there is only 300 rpm differnce between the 3.42's and the 3.73's. I dont even think thats enought difference to hear that much.

I am also getting 3.73's for the 2 series carrier because i dont feel like buying a whole new posi.

I just got my new tires Eagle F1 GS D3's....do you guys think i will have traction issues with the 3.73's?

Also, can any of you say how much difference there is quarter mile between 2.73vs3.42vs3.73???

Thanks

i think you'll see a pretty big gain! I doubt the gas mileage will go down with an M6, you'll just be using 6th gear more often.

I'm surprised that nobody has told you this, but your LT1 will actually benefit quite a bit more from a good 2800-3200 stall converter with the factory gears than any 3.42 or 3.73 gear set-up with the stock stall. For close to the same money, you'd be simply amazed at what an aftermarket torque converter would do for your car(both at the strip & in the SOTP department).

A Vig 2800 would easily cut off 5 whole tenths with some Nitto DR's for ya where as you'd be lucky to lose maybe 2 tenths(probably more like 1) with just the gear change. These things offer unbelievable gains at the track...

And with any stall under 3000, driveability is still great. After a few days, you won't even remember what the stock 'verter felt like. Not to mention, it usually locks up somewhere around the neighborhood of 35mph or so(so you'll retain your normal rpm usage at any speeds above that, including on the highway).

Go with the TC and only get the gears later on if you decide you really need them(if maximum performance is your #1 goal).

I've heard that gears are more fun, and will give you a better SOTP improvement, so I went with them. Plus, I don't have to worry about pulling my tranny to install a converter. 1 tenth? where do you get this from? 2.73s to 3.73s and 1 tenth? that's ridiculously low.

My 2.73 to 3.42 change netted me 3 tenths...running DR's. (edited - when the car was stock, itwent from 14.0 to 13.7)

Trust me, the torque converter is more fun and will definitely give you more SOTP feel(with a 2800+ stall). I absolutely could not believe how hard my old 2000 Z28 could launch with the Vig 2800 combined with the stock 3.23 gears. No aftermarket gear set-up could've done that...

Didn't realize you were coming from 2.73's. So I'll say you'll gain 2 solid tenths with descent traction. About one tenth if you were coming from 3.23's. At least this is the norm with LT1's/LS1's that I've followed who have made these gear changes in combination with the stock converter...

Good luck!

SOTP = Straight off the punch?? (unfamiliar with the lingo)

how are stall converters for highway driving and stop and go traffic?

Seat Of The Pants...also known as the Butt-o-meter. Lots of people install parts and claim to have felt a difference detectable by the SOTP method, but find little to no gain on the dyno. SOTP improvements are nice though...especially for feeling like you got your moneys worth....whether you actually did or not is another story.

One word of advice, if you're going from 2.73s to 3.42s, you should ask the programmer to retain the torque converter program from the stock gears.

Here's why:

With my 2.73s, my stock converter would lock in 4th at speeds above 45 MPH.

With my 3.42s, after only changing the PCM to update the gear ratio, the converter locks in 4th at 36 MPH.

If you can imagine, it's a PITA to have your converter locked IMO at speeds below 45 MPH.

I'm getting the guy that programmed my car for the gears to put the stock converter program back in it so it locks up like it did originally.

IMO you guys are underestimating gears.....2 tenths from 2.73-3.73 with traction is ridiculous

my last ET is 14.4 @ 97mph with a 2.5 60'.....once I get drag radials I'll run it again and see how much it improved (hello 13s!)

Uhh, 2.5 60'?? You might want to try starting your burnout BEFORE the green light.
