Re: Guys with BIG cams and/or Comp R lifters

Is it just me, or are the Comp R's just a PITA to set correctly? Everything went smoothly with a head, cam swap on my car. But guess what, after 6 or 7 tries these lifters are still making a hell of a racket. I'm seriously thinking about throwing the stock lifters back in. Sorry for the rant, but I and others could really use some answers.

Quite sure, as I've checked multiple times.

It's not just you. I thought I was going nuts--it seemed like a lifter or two would "grow" every time I set them. I wasn't nuts. They were growing.

That's something to check for. I just put the stock lifters back in.

Not a big fan of Comp R's at the moment....

What is wrong with them? I couldn't get the pics to work.
It sure seems like a lot people are having "issues" with these lately.

The retainers that hold the plungers in spontaneously combusted, evaporated, shattered, turned to liquid, pulled a Houdini, went south for the winter...or in some other way failed. This allowed the plungers to come to the top of the lifter when trying to set the valves to "zero lash."

I don't know why the pics don't work for you.

Could you actually see this from the top of the motor??? Or did you not discover this until you actually pulled the lifters out?

Re: Guys with BIG cams and/or Comp R lifters

I suspected something was up when it seemed one or two pushrods would "grow" every time I adjusted my valves--the nut on the rocker stud would be backed way off from where it was before, you could visually see the wear marks on the pushrod where it rubbed on the guideplate were now above the guideplate and the pushrod was wearing a new set of marks....

I thought I was incompetent, going nuts or some combination of the two. Until I saw a few others post here about their R's popping their tops. I figured that would explain it.

But I didn't know for sure until I pulled the intake and had a look.

I see them now
I'm planning on using them with my new setup, but I'm starting to wonder if a solid roller setup would be less maintenance.

Re: Guys with BIG cams and/or Comp R lifters

I'm running a cm 236/245 cam in my car and don't have any problems with starting after it's been sitting. If my car's cold when i start it it'll idle at 1500 for a minute or so and then drops to a 1000, I don't know if they did it in the tuning or not but it helps out.
