Grinding noise

I've had a griding noise on my 96 TA for a while now. The noise only occurs when I accelerate hard from a stop. It sounds like the noise is coming from the rear end of the car. My buddy tried to figure out where the noise was coming from while I accelerated but he couldnt figure it out. I changed the diff fluid cause I thought that could've been the problem, but the noise is still there. Any ideas what the problem is and how I could fix it? any help is appreciated

Re: Grinding noise

Like I said, it sounds like its from the rear of the car but I couldn't figure out exactly where. It could be the middle. So if it might be the pilot bearing what do I need to do to fix this problem?

Re: Grinding noise

pilot bearing = Big job for a 5-10$ part. do a search for pilot bearing, there's alot of people who've had trouble w/ them including myself. If i'm not mistaken, as long as it doesn't get too bad to where your car starts to shake like crazy, i dont think you "absolutely need" to change it, unless it really annoys you. also, do you ever get stuck in gear and can't get it out when stopped somewhere w/ your foot on the clutch too long? that would be a good sign of "pilot bearing".

Someone correct me if i'm wrong...

That has never happened to me. It feels like I loose power in the drivetrain when I launch and I get that horrible grinding noise.

Re: Grinding noise

if it's coming from rear of car - could be broken tooth/tossed bearing in rear end, if coming from tranny area, could be clutch??? i don't really know , it could be alot of things, sorry i can't help you out any more than that. good luck

Re: Grinding noise

I think I have the same problem. But mine occured after I installed my headers. I checked for clearance and I'm not touching anything. Mine happens pretty much everytime I take off from a dead stop or when I hit it hard rolling. The only thing I can think to do is the next time I get it on a dyno, set a video camera under the car and see if the exhaust is flexing enough to create contact. It's about to drive me crazy too Sounds like the whole car is about to fall apart and it only has 29K on it.

Re: Grinding noise

im almost sure youve got a bearing going out in the rear end, you should be able to tell distinctly if its the rear end or tranny

Re: Grinding noise

Heres my take... I had the SAME problem... well it sounds it? Whenever I was at about 1000-1400 rpms, I would hear a rattle/grind sound. It turned out to me... to be exhaust manifold bolts. Do you have a ticking sound at all?

2nd... a bad Pilot bearing isn't the problem, you're thinking of a Throwout Bearing or a Release Bearing (Samething, just different names for it). If you got a lift or someway to hike up the car, it shouldn't be to bad of a job.

Throwout bearings usually don't rattle, they are just there for pressing the Pressure Plate to pull the Clutch Disc away from the Flywheel. If its a rattle from the Tranny, then its clutch related because thats where the clutch assembly is.

But you said the rear eh? Um... Its probably something stupid like a bolt holding the exhaust together or the hanger. L0L Get under the car and tie yourself to the frame and tell him to drive around

Re: Grinding noise

are you having trouble with it going into gear also?, does it only rattle in one specific gear?
