green vs red ! (coolant that is)
I just did a coolant change. I used to have the green stuff, but I realized the one I bought is dex-cool red; I flushed the whole thing and put the red in. I was wondering if I am the only one with the red stuff instead of the green one
well my car came with dex-cool. when my water pump went out, the shop changed it to the green stuff. its been green ever since last year...I have some dexcool sittin in my house, soon as I get to it I'll change it back to dexcool.
I run distilled water and a bottle of water wetter in the summer and when it comes time to put her up for the winter, she gets a 70/30 mix of the green stuff. Changing it at least twice a year, I don't need no stinkin' red stuff. She's a 94 and the inside of the radiator looks brand new -- no scale or gunk.
You can run green gycerol i think they call it, in place of dexcool. But if you switch you will need to seriously flush the out the whole system to go back, cause the green eats dexcool. I like the green better. Thats what i run.
Terran2k -- only use distilled water with Dexcool cause tap water will make it gunk up after a couple years. Also flush it completely like fbird95 said. After three years my 00 ZR2 Blazer had to be acid flushed to get the Dexcool gunk out of the heater core so it would work. I've heard the factory is too cheap to use distilled water when they fill them and cooling system flushing isn't covered by my GM extended warranty.
ive heard from a realiable source that GM is having some "issues" with dex-cool, and was told if the car was equip. originally with it to keep it in for about 2 years then switch over to green stuff...anybody else heard GM having problems with Dex-cool????
My 00 Blazer clogged up the heater core with dexcool and the service manager mentioned something about a bulliten saying to acid flush the system. I had it done but haven't checked to see what they put back in -- red or green. Hmm. . .
I have been running green for about two year now and my heater core popped.../
when i took the heater core out it was full of red lol......
I will NOT be using red any more.... Im a green guy and my perfectly clean radiator like green too

I flushed the system pretty well (water hose open in full in the radiator, bottom open and engine running). Tons of crap came out; I had the last coolant + water wetter in for 3 years.
Then I put the red stuff, but there is now green crap (small particles) floating in it!
looks like I need to flush again. Do you guys know any chemical I can use at home to flush the thing? (vinegar's pretty acidic; would that work? I can remove the thermostat, and run the electric water pump to get everything to flow)

Be sure to flush your system well if you switch from one to the other.. Dex cool and the green mixed will accually "gum" up and then you'll have a mess on your hands. It does last longer than green but is much more corrosive.
