Unhappy Grade 8 bolt Snapped, any suggestions???

Was lifting up the motor tonight to replace my oil pan gasket and as i was lifting the engine, all of a sudden the bolt (grade 8) snapped off in the block (bottom water pump bolt hole on the pass. side) Anybody have any suggestions on how to get it out? I was thinking about using a Colbalt easy out but im not sure if that'll work. Im really stressed about this now, so if any of you guys can think of anything that you've had work for u in the past PLEASE post!!!!!

Get a good welding shop to weld to it, and then grab the weld with vice grips and turn out

That's what I would do. I dont like messing with broken off bolts in heads and motors and crap. To me it aint worth the risk. Especially with a grade 8 bolt, it wont be ez to drill and ez out.

Besides the welding shop idea all I could suggest is to go to Sears and get something called Drill Out. It's four bits that you put in your drill for like $50 and it is GREAT. BTW, how did you break a WP bolt while lifting the engine?

i would try a reverse drill bit if the bolt wasn't seized it might come right back out.

When the head of the bolt snaps off there is usually no pressure on whats left and it will come out fairly easily.

Update

Well after work tonight i bought a 7/64 drill bit and a 5/16 easy out and frilled a hole in the old bolt, proceeded to work the easy out in the bolt (took me a few tries to "catch") into the bolt; started to dig in and then "Snap" the easy out broke off inside the bolt. Now im am REALLY F*CKED, and really sick of all these bumps in the road i keep coming along. I really don't know what to do at this point. Again if anyone can suggest and reasonable conclusions they are always appreciated! Lessoned learned tonight: EASY OUTs SUCK!!! They have NEVER worked for me in the past etheir. Don't mean to come off negative but im soooooo sick of all this

Pay the money and take it to the shop. Just get done and over with it. No need to stress yourself even more. I feel your pain.

dont laugh but does work. Take a regular candle. Heat up the wax on the bolt. Then take a small flat screwdriver and hammer and grab it and hit it around. Might have to add wax when it gets stiff again. I laughed the first time I head that until I pulled out a broke head bolt with it and a broken exaust manifold bolt.

Try to get the easy out out,use a small sharp punch.Hitting it in a clockwise direction. If you can get it out, drll the bolt out and retap it.

Maybe get an Easier-Out to remove the Easy-Out?

Once you get the broken bolt out, don't use a Grade 8 bolt in bending as it appears you did.

Grade 8 bolts get their very high strength from heat treating which makes them stong in tension or stretching. The down side is that when you try to bend them, they don't bend much before they break. In other words they are more "brittle" than Grade 5 or less bolts. This is typical of heat treated steel; the harder and stronger it is, the more brittle it is, and the less it should be used in bending.

I don't think a Gr 8 bolt is specified for waterpump attachment. That seems like overkill.

Try the hot wax method. I've had it work.
