got car back from shop

ok so i sent it my 97 ss into the shop because it would overheat when idling for only about 5 minutes , the temp would go up to about 230 degrees when it would do that i would shut it off , also the car would always cool down when i got moving again , but i took it in again because i figured something must be wrong with the thermostat or cooling fan or something. the shop i took it to, which by the way i bought the car at two weeks ago said that the car running that hot is normal. Thats why I am asking u guys the experts , is that temperature normal for the car while idling ? i thought it should be more like 210. Ok problem number two, the car also would leak about two fist size spots of oil underneath the engine , i had that looked at and the mechanic said it was a gasket from the safety inspection when i bought the car that needed to be re sealed. he said he re sealed it and it would be all set. has anyone ever heard of something like that? i picked the car up in the dark tonight so ill now for sure tomm if the leak is gone. thanks for all replies

are you sure they meant it like you said it? or did they say something like they would fix it due to the safety insp? cant see what they would take off to do the safety. I do those at work, and there isnt anything to take off besides the oil filter. you'll need to get down there and look for yourself if the leak continues. the intakes leak on these pretty regularly, so look at the block above the starter. if its wet there, thats what it needs. whatever is leaking, make sure they fix it for free since you JUST bought the car. also, it should be around 210. I have had a 160 thermo and tuneing for along time, so I cant remember what the gauge reads. if it cools back down while your driving, sounds like you maybe the rad. fins are clogged, or maybe the coolant is needing to be flushed. start w/those two things. alot of times the rad. fins will be clogged and you cant see it cause its behind the a/c condensor. take off the 4 10mm bolts and remove the plastic cover from the top of the rad.. you'll be able to look down between the rad. and condensor to see if there is a build up of leaves or mud inside the fins. good luck.

Your temps are not that high, but how are you reading them? From the dash gauge? It can be off, mine is off by atleast 10-20 degrees sometimes more. I watch my autoxray scanner while driving, just got SLP fan switch and before temps were 210-220 in traffic, got to 220 and fans took it back down. Now with SLP fan switch it stays at 195-200 in traffic and also lower than before on the highway. NOTE this is in the last week in New Jersey and weather has been 65-75 degrees when testing. I do not even think my HIGH fan setting was going on before the SLP switch which means to temp did not get high enough to make the stock PCM think it needed a second fan. On scanner I never saw "Fan 2 On" just "Fan 1 On" and now with SLP switch it sounds like I turn on the AC and cools down the car very quickly . If you scan the car you can get a better idea of the true temp, and see what fans are on and what the car is doing.

Well, my car is also lowered and my air dam is probably 1 or 2 inches shorter after 2 years of rubbing it all the time so that is probably a factor in my cooling until i go back to stock height soon and get a new air dam.
